It's impossible to describe the panic that comes over you when you're a surgeon, and your pager goes off in the middle of the night.
In the middle of the night before her shift at the hospital, Mallory Shepherd sat on her bed with her computer on her lap. On the screen were her three sisters in New York, all meeting together at Nancy Shepherd's house just for the call.
It was then that she shared the awaited news of the gender of the baby, and all of her sisters gushed with excitement over the fact that she was having a boy. With Lizzie and Nancy poking fun at Katie for being wrong with her guess.
Over the camera, Mallory held up her newest ultrasound with a smile. "And see, he's actually starting to look like a baby. It's kind of insane when you think about it. It seems like just a couple of weeks ago when he looked like a blob."
"How dare you call my nephew a blob," Nancy joked with a laugh. "That's how all babies look at that stage."
"Oh my," Kathleen held her chest as she added. "Could you imagine if he gets the Shepherd blue eyes?"
"You and the blue eyes," Nancy retorted with a raised brow. "Don't you wish you had them?"
Lizzie couldn't help but roll her eyes as Katie and Nancy began to bicker. With a shake of her head, she tried to stay focused with her questions. "How have you been feeling, Mal? About done with the morning sickness?"
"Every time I think I've fully moved past it," Mallory started to explain. "I smell something that's off, and I'm running off to throw up. Again."
"Yeah," Nancy shook her head in response. "I wouldn't get hopeful that that's going away anytime soon."
Beside her, Katie went to insist. "Don't crush the girl's dreams, Nancy."
Your heart starts to race. Your mind freezes. Your fingers go numb.
You're invested.
Nancy shrugged her shoulders as she continued to insist. "No, I'm serious. I still get nauseous every time I smell pepperoni. You can thank your nephew for that one."
"I still can't believe that you're having a boy," Katie was quick to change the subject back to Mallory's pregnancy. "Now that you know, have you started to think about names?"
"I haven't," Mallory answered, rubbing the back of her neck nervously. "Actually—"
"Come on, Mal, you gotta start thinking about names," Lizzie added, making Katie nod along in agreement. "The name is the most important part of having a baby."
