The dream is this: that we'll finally be happy when we reach our goals...

The next morning, Mallory Shepherd had all of her bags packed for her and Addison Montgomery's trip to Los Angeles. As she finished her packing, Alex Karev looked bummed, not wanting her to go away for the week.

"I still don't understand why you're going away right before the intern exams," Alex brought the subject up again. "You should be studying."

"I need this, Alex, I need to be able to talk to Violet, and Cooper, and Sam, and Naomi, and Pete," she listed them off, name by name. "You know, all of them. This George and Izzie mess has me stressed out—"

"So tell Callie."

"No, I can't do that, I'm not betraying George, I'm not letting him win," Mallory retorted, angrily zipping her suitcase shut. "Don't worry, I'll study the entire time I'm down there. Just like I did when I was there last time."

Find the guy, finish our internship. That's the dream; then we get there, and if we're human, we immediately start dreaming of something else.

He sighed, kissing her before looking her in the eye and saying. "I'm gonna miss you. How am I supposed to tolerate these idiots with you gone?"

She gave him another kiss as she insisted. "I'm sure that you'll manage just fine."

They heard two honks outside, and Mallory looked out the window and saw Addison Montgomery outside in her red convertible. Her smile widened as she started to grab her bags, but Alex stopped her before she rushed away.

"Be safe, and call me when you get down there," Alex paused before he added. "Or at least message me. Okay?"

"Promise."

Once Mallory was gone, Alex adjusted to the silence and the empty feeling inside the apartment and decided that he wasn't fond of it at all. He took a nap before his shift, trying to find anything to do, but nothing came to mind.

Because if this is the dream, then we'd like to wake up...

When Meredith Grey walked into the apartment like she normally did, her eyebrows furrowed when she saw Alex sitting on the couch by himself. She looked around, expecting to see Mallory somewhere.
