The next morning when Mallory Shepherd woke up, she was surprised to find Alex Karev sleeping in bed next to her. Though they didn't sleep together, his arm was comfortably around her waist. She moved quietly to go to the kitchen and start getting ready for the day.
She grabbed a glass of orange juice and looked out her window, from her kitchen window she could see the front of the hospital. Dozens of nurses started standing with signs, protesting working extra hours because of the surgeons.
Her apartment door opened and Meredith Grey walked in, setting her things on the kitchen table. Mallory held her head and asked. "Doesn't anyone know how to knock? What if I was doing something private?"
"If you're talking about Alex," Meredith started with a smirk. "Everyone kind of already suspects it."
"What? No—" Mallory exclaimed before stopping and inquiring. "What do you mean everyone suspects it?"
Meredith shrugged her shoulders casually, taking a drink from Mallory's juice. "Come on, everyone has seen the way you two look at each other. And Alex ditches anyone to be at your side. We've all known since the start of our internship."
"You think you're funny," Mallory stuck her tongue out at her friend. "Why aren't you at your frat house?"
"I have to stop and visit my mother. The nurses seem to have a hard time with her and they think my job is no reason not to visit every single day," Meredith told her, seeming fed up with the situation. "And my house is not a frat house."
"If that's what helps you sleep at night. It kind of feels like the hospital frat house," joked Mallory as she began to smile. "Not that I don't love it."
She threw a balled-up napkin in her direction, but Mallory dodged it and flipped her off playfully. Meredith looked around curiously before questioning. "So, where's Alex? Isn't he usually on your couch every morning?"
"Yeah, uh," Mallory froze, remembering their kiss and waking up in bed next to him. "He's just in the spare bedroom."
Just as Mallory said her lie, her bedroom door opened and a hungover Alex Karev stumbled out without his shirt on. He didn't even notice Meredith as he groaned. "Please tell me you already have the coffee started."
Meredith's jaw dropped as she turned to her friend. "You told me he was in the spare bedroom!"
"Well," she stuttered before blurting out. "What does it matter which bedroom he's in?"
