There's this thing that happens when people find out you're a doctor. They stop seeing you as a person and begin to see you as something bigger than you are.
They have to see us that way, as gods. Otherwise, we're just like everyone else...
Unsure... Flawed... Normal.
So we act strong, we remain stoic. We hide the fact that we're all too human.
The time at the bar was short-lived, as the happiest moments always are. Alex Karev paged Derek Shepherd 911 to Jen Harmon's room. When he arrived, he brought Addison Montgomery with him, knowing that the patient would require the best care for her case. And Addison was the best of the best when it came to pregnant patients and their babies.
Days later, Mallory Shepherd and Alex Karev stood outside of Jen's room when Meredith Grey walked up to them. The three residents stood in silence, watching as Derek Shepherd sat contently by Jen's bedside.
"So," Alex was the first to break the silence, turning to Meredith as he asked. "Is he still beating himself up?"
"What?"
"Addison said something about how she thinks he's beating himself up," Mallory explained with a nod. "And frankly, I agree."
"The head of neuro hasn't left his patient's bedside for three days," Alex bluntly stated. "Anyone with eyes can see that something's wrong."
Meredith shrugged her shoulders as she tried to insist. "He's fine. And I thought Addison was leaving. She put her brother on a plane last night."
"Why would she leave at a time like this?" Mallory questioned with furrowed brows, shutting down Meredith's suggestion. "Jen needs an OB on her team that knows what they're doing. Especially if Derek wants to attempt surgery."
"Admit it," Alex started to chuckle once he noticed the look on her face. "Her hanging around your guy, it bugs."
"Is it bugging you?" Mallory was quick to ask next. "Come on, Mer, they've been divorced for a while. I mean, he divorced her for you."
With her eyes narrowed at Alex, Meredith deflected. "It doesn't bug. Alex is the only thing that's bugging me at the moment."
Suddenly, Derek came out of Jen's room, where the monitors were starting to beep faster. With a look of pure exhaustion on his face, he ordered. "Karev. Page Addison, tell her that I need her to stay for this case."
