Tommy had now been in the hospital two weeks. He had just been taken off the I.V. but still had to remain under close watch. He had lost a lot of weight and wasn't talking to anyone. He had stopped checking his phone and pushed the nurse away when she tried to feed him. With his waning strength, he slapped the plate out of her hand and grabbed her scissors from her pocket.
Before she could stop him, he plunged the scissors into his arm and began to twist them. She somehow managed to get help to restrain him and retrieve the scissors.
Paul and Gene had been coming to see Tommy and had just stepped off the elevator when the doctor rushed into Tommy's room. "Gene!" cried Paul. "Something happened!"
They rushed in to find blood everywhere, Tommy in restraints and the food covered floor. The doctor was trying to stitch up Tommy's arm and Gene had to catch a fainting Paul.
When Paul regained his senses, the doctor bluntly told him Tommy was being transferred to the psych ward. "He is beyond regular help here. He will remain on the 10th floor until there has been drastic improvement. I need you to remove all his wedding ring and other jewelry. He also has to be dressed in hospital pajamas so I'll let you do that." "I'll return in 30 minutes."
Paul looked at Gene with tears in his eyes. "Gene, I can't commit him." "Look at him."
"You're not committing him. The doctor is."
Paul walked over to the bed and looked at Tommy. " I love you. I'm taking your valuables home and re-dressing you. You will be on the 10th floor until your release." "I LOVE YOU!" Paul tearfully removed both of Tommy's rings and his necklaces. After shaking out the hospital pajamas, he began to undress Tommy. His clothes were blood covered so Paul tossed them on the floor and re-dressed Tommy. He kissed him before turning away.
Gene led him out to the car where he broke down.
