"There you go," Luo JinXiao murmured, hugging QiongQi tightly as she jumped, her blue skirt fluttering. The screams of encouragement quickly faded above her as darkness enveloped her.
The darkness was fleeting. Soon, the air around her seemed to solidify, like a giant net catching her as she fell, then slowly lowering her to the ground.
Luo JinXiao landed steadily. She was the last to enter, and the others had already vanished. A letter lay neatly on the ground, which she bent to pick up. QiongQi leapt from her arms.
"Sweetie, don’t run off. It’s dangerous here," Luo JinXiao called, grabbing its tail, only for QiongQi to turn and roar at her.
Startled, she retracted her hand. "You’re really fierce today."
Opening the envelope, she found a passage: "Entering life and death. Of the living, ten are born; of the dead, ten are born; living leads to death, also ten are born."
Flipping it over, she found no other writing, leaving her puzzled. Could navigating between fortune and misfortune be the test’s content?
Suddenly, four stone doors rose before her, each glowing with a blinding white light.
Scooping up QiongQi again, Luo JinXiao stepped through a door without hesitation. The world spun, and when she opened her eyes, she stood amidst a towering stone forest. The stone pillars rose like giants, intimidating in their sheer size.
"This is a formation," Luo JinXiao noted to QiongQi, gently rubbing its head. "Looks like the first challenge is the Life and Death Formation. If you find the way, you live; if not, you die. The Shifang Gathering sure spares no expense."
QiongQi bared its teeth but didn’t bite.
"Good thing your master knows this formation well. It won’t stump me. If you don’t want me to hold you, get in the pouch. It’s dangerous outside," Luo JinXiao said softly, bending to meet QiongQi’s eyes.
QiongQi ignored her, trotting into the formation with its tail up.
"After a few days with Little Martial Aunt, you’re getting just as temperamental," Luo JinXiao sighed, jogging ahead to enter the stone forest.
As soon as she stepped in, the stone pillars moved as if triggered, shifting horizontally in a dizzying display, dust swirling in the air.
Luo JinXiao didn’t rush. Closing her eyes, she listened to the stones grinding against the ground. After a moment, she flicked her fingers, sending a thread of spiritual energy through the stones.
"This side is the Black Tortoise," she murmured, shattering a pillar with her palm, revealing a narrow path.
"Come on, Sweetie," she called, stepping into the gap and halting only when the path was blocked again.
Another flick of spiritual energy—some passed through, while others dissipated on contact.
"White Tiger," she continued, shattering another pillar on her left, opening another path. She repeated this several times, eventually moving with ease, no longer needing to use energy, just following a pattern.
In less than an incense stick’s time, she reached the center, where a massive stone pillar stood, thick as several men with arms outstretched. This was the formation’s core; destroy it, and the formation would collapse.
