"Got it!" Luo JinXiao exclaimed joyfully, rushing forward before pausing and turning back, her eyes wide in disbelief. "Wait, save the tree demon?"
"The tree demon has demon energy but no malice. It hasn't harmed anyone—I can sense that. And the demonic energy from that day was entirely different. Quickly, go," Qu WeiYin urged, her brows furrowed.
Luo JinXiao hesitated no longer. Her pale green silhouette leapt into the air, cutting through the night sky with a silver streak, shattering the formation. The Qing Yan Palace disciples fell back in surprise, caught off guard.
"Who dares to interfere!" a veiled woman shouted, leaping up with her sword gleaming, pointing directly at Luo JinXiao.
"Sorry!" Luo JinXiao raised her hands, grinning apologetically, indicating she meant no harm.
The woman, seeing Luo JinXiao’s blue robes and gentle demeanor, lowered her weapon, but insisted, "Fellow cultivator, this tree demon has cultivated for a thousand years, crossed into the human realm, and poses a threat. It must be eliminated. Please step aside and don’t block our path."
Luo JinXiao, hands still raised, stepped back until she stood beneath the tree demon. "I mean no harm. But if you're looking for the one causing trouble in Pingxi Town, you might be mistaken. It's best to investigate thoroughly to avoid harming the innocent."
The woman scrutinized Luo JinXiao before shaking her head. "Fellow cultivator, even if we’re mistaken, this demon has hidden in the human realm for too long and will eventually cause harm. We see you’re young and won’t argue further. Please move aside."
"Wait, let’s talk a bit more." Luo JinXiao glanced at the moon, judging it wasn’t yet midnight. The malevolent demon hadn’t appeared yet, so she smiled again. "But if it hasn’t committed any evil, killing it would be inhumane."
"It’s a demon, what humanity is there to discuss? Move, or we’ll act!" a man shouted, stepping forward aggressively.
As his words fell, he drew his sword, launching a fierce attack at Luo JinXiao. Quickly assessing that their cultivation was around the Void Dust stage, and therefore not too threatening, Luo JinXiao didn’t even draw her sword. She effortlessly broke his attack with a wave of her hand.
Stunned by how easily she deflected him, the man exchanged glances with his companions before they all charged, forming a formation to trap Luo JinXiao.
Seeing this, Qu WeiYin tensed, raising her hand slightly to help Luo JinXiao, but before she could act, Luo JinXiao chanted a spell. The dew on the forest leaves condensed into frost, then ice needles, piercing the formation’s weak points, shattering it instantly.
The Qing Yan Palace members exchanged surprised glances. Qu WeiYin lowered her hand, her eyes a mix of delight and puzzlement, finally calming.
The tree demon began clapping its leaf-formed hands above Luo JinXiao, seemingly pleased. Luo JinXiao, caught off guard, was showered with leaves and twigs, leaving her a bit dazed. She brushed the debris from her hair.
"Fellow cultivator, aiding a demon is disgraceful!" the man seethed, furious at Luo JinXiao's smugness.
"And you, attacking without discernment, taking lives—demon lives or not—lack morality! If you kill demons indiscriminately, how are you different from the demons you condemn?" Luo JinXiao cupped her hands around her mouth, shouting.
