Qu WeiYin walked past Luo JinXiao with her head lowered, saying nothing as she moved briskly.
Luo JinXiao patted QiongQi's head and followed, both human and beast keeping pace. Qu WeiYin seemed tired, deep in thought, not uttering a word.
Luo JinXiao wisely kept quiet as well.
Soon, the sun dipped below the horizon, the autumn days noticeably growing shorter. The sky's red hue gave way to the deepening night in the blink of an eye, leaving the street almost deserted, with only a few people hurrying along.
The surroundings grew increasingly silent. A young boy, clutching a skewer of candied hawthorns, seemed to have lost his family. He stumbled along the main road, crying loudly, calling for his parents.
Unbeknownst to him, a shadowy figure began to follow, drifting like smoke but lingering persistently.
The boy remained unaware of the shadow, continuing to cry as he turned into a dark alley, his footsteps growing more frantic.
The shadow suddenly sped up, closing in on him. Just as it lunged at the boy's back, a flash of fire appeared. A crimson sword sliced through the shadow, spraying a sticky black liquid. A piercing, inhuman scream echoed, sending a shiver through anyone who heard it.
Luo JinXiao covered her ears with one hand while grabbing the shadow with the other, shaking it. "What is this thing, looking like cotton fluff?" she muttered.
Qu WeiYin bent down to help the sobbing boy to his feet, glancing aside. "It's a demon seed—a demonic energy that hasn't taken form."
Hearing this, Luo JinXiao tossed the shadow far away with disgust, wiping her hands clean on her skirt. "Demonic energy can take form? Imagine how ugly that would be."
Qu WeiYin's lips twitched in amusement.
Some people ran up from the other end of the alley. The boy, seeing them, ran over, still crying. They grabbed the child and fled without a word, disappearing quickly.
Luo JinXiao stood on tiptoe, watching them leave, grumbling, "Not even a thank you."
Qu WeiYin flicked her forehead lightly, gesturing toward the squirming shadow on the ground. "Quiet. Follow it."
Rubbing her head, Luo JinXiao murmured an "Oh" and quietly trailed after the shadow.
The shadow moved slowly, resembling a giant crawling insect from a distance. Luo JinXiao held her breath, fearing it might vanish if she lost focus.
After a couple of turns, the shadow picked up speed, finally slithering into a dilapidated, abandoned house. The door was barely intact, and the steps were covered in thick moss, looking filthy in the night.
Cautiously, Luo JinXiao stepped forward, but Qu WeiYin pulled her back.
"Careful, stay behind me," Qu WeiYin instructed, maneuvering her to the rear.
"This place has an entrance to the demon realm," Qu WeiYin whispered, releasing a wave of golden spiritual energy from her palm, enveloping them and concealing their presence.
The interior was pitch black, obscuring any hidden dangers. Unable to help herself, Luo JinXiao grasped Qu WeiYin's wrist.
Qu WeiYin hesitated slightly but didn't pull away, leading the way forward.
