We joked with the bed-ridden teenager until he started to get dizzy. I set out to bring him something other than Tapwater, and when I returned, Abner and Homelander were whispering, sharing little laughs and glances.

"Aha! Secrets! I wanna know!" I said and inched closer to them after setting down the assortment of beverages.

"Secrets? What secrets. Abner, did you hear any secrets?" Homelander asked and widened his eyes.

"No. Sorry, Red Canary. No secrets here!" He said and smiled.
"Before you go. Can we take a picture together?" He asked shyly.

"Oh, of course we can." I smiled.

We took lots of pictures. Some with both of us, some of just one of us with him. Even his parents were in some, and at the end, we took one of Abner with his parents.

"You're a tough dude, Abner. Don't you ever forget that." I said and lightly hugged him goodbye.

It felt odd leaving the young boy behind. We had spent only a short time with him, yet for me, it felt like half a century had passed.
We left the hospital, and to my surprise, the outside was quiet.
A handful of reporters had set up blankets and formed a sort of conference seating on one of the parking spaces.

As they saw us leave, I turned to Homelander and asked if he would be up for a couple of questions. He nodded, and we went over to the group.

"I'm glad to see you've listened to my words." I said and smiled.

"Since you all waited so patiently, I think we can spare some time to answer a couple of questions." Homelander announced and smiled.

Each of the reporters had prepared a handful of questions and waited their turn. It was the most civilized scriptless interview I had ever been a part of.
