Jacob lent against the wall of St James' talking to a group of nurses whom he was on a conference with. They were all on a coffee break chatting with one another when Jacob caught sight of someone in the corner of his eye.
Connie.
He was about it shout over to her when he noticed the sign directing people to the building she had just exited. His heart sank and his eyes filled with tears as he read sign over and over in his head.
'Oncology'
He dropped his coffee to the floor alerting many of the other nurses including Charlie who followed him as he walked off, Jacob failing to notice the other sign also pointing to the same building."Jacob what's wrong?" Charlie asked as they walked back up to the conference room.
"I saw Connie" he said bluntly as he pushed the door open.
Charlie tried his best to cover for her, not understanding that Jacob had gotten the wrong end of the stick, "she must of had a meeting" he said.
"Connie doesn't go to meetings in jeans, that's not Connie. She was leaving oncology" he said, the concern clear in his voice as he grabbed his coat and bag.
"No she wasn't, she was leaving maternity. She's pregnant" he said but it was too late, he had already walked out slamming the door behind him.
He went straight to his car and drove home, praying that Connie had gone home after leaving the hospital.Luckily for him she had and she came running down the stairs now wearing a baggy jumper and bed shorts when she heard his voice.
"Jay what are you doing home? Shouldn't you be at the conference?" she asked.
"I was, but then I saw my wife leaving oncology and needed to come home to talk to her about it. Connie are you sick?" he asked with tears forming in her eyes.
"No! Jacob I wasn't leaving Oncology" she said.
"I saw you Connie! I read the sign, what's going on?" he said.
"You read the wrong sign then Jacob, the only sickness I have is morning sickness! I was leaving maternity" she explained.
"Maternity?" he stuttered.
"Yes Jacob, I'm pregnant, not dying" she told himJacob pulled Connie into his arms and began kissing her frantically, "oh my god I was so scared, I thought I was going to lose you" he said as he held her.
"No! I'm so sorry I scared you Jacob, but why didn't you just come over and talk to me? I'd of told you straight away" Connie said.
"I couldn't, I couldn't ask you in public because I thought there was something wrong with you and I'd do broken down con" he admitted.
Connie rubbed his back as he hugged her, "I love you so much Jacob, and don't worry because I'm fine and so are our babies" she said.
"Babies? As in more than one?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
"It's twins, double the sleepless nights, double the screaming, double the hormones! Fun!" she giggled.
Jacob kissed her passionately, "you've made me so happy right now" he said.
