It's not that difficult to understand God's capability to be both loving toward us and intolerant if we should so choose to be bonded with the world if you just simply imagine the spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend you absolutely adore cherish and love...and that same person completely disregarding your devotion in favor for someone less or even a complete stranger. (James 4:4-6)
Put yourself in that situation and you will understand God is completely justified in His enmity and jealousy toward you. He wants only you, and you to want only Him. That's not selfish or unreasonable; that's pure love.
