I used to live and think that prayer alone was sufficient to guide and help me through this life. But,
PRAYER is my communication/relationship to God
&
The sword of the Spirit, which is the WORD OF GOD, is God's communication/relationship to me.
Because of our weakness, our own flesh, and the imperfection and distractions of this life, we will forget who our God is and who we are before Him. These are the two outcomes that are destined to happen if we do not take time to listen to Him speaking through His Word:
A) We will either forget the frailty of our humanity and be filled with pride, or
B) We will be forget the saving strength and love of our God and be filled with despair
PRAYER is our communication and relationship to God and the SWORD OF THE Spirit is God's communication and relationship to us. It is by this sword that He purifies and sanctifies us (diminishing our fallen self and making us more like Christ) and brings us to a proper balance of the truth.
