"In EVERY-THING give thanks; for this is My will in My Son for you." says the Lord ~1 Thessalonians 5:18
One of the things that we must understand first, is that God says we are to give thanks "in everything" not necessarily "for everything". He does not call us to thank Him FOR evil and calamities like divorce, rape, murder, hurricanes, the passing of a loved one etc. Such is the result of the curse of sin and the groaning of creation under it. "...Far be it from God to do wickedness; and from the Almighty to commit iniquity." (Job 34:10)
What our Creator-Savior calls us to is possible/within our ability to do; and not just because He says it as King.
The ability we have in thanking God IN the midst of the darkness, the terrible, the grievous and even cruel circumstances we are in, is that which knows in undisappointing and unfailing faith (though that person upholding it, is neither perfect nor invincible) that God is greater than these circumstances; shadows will be overcome by His light, love and not hatred will have the final say and the final laugh, His will shall prove to be the mightiest of all other wills, His purpose and plan will be unveiled as transcending and prevailing all other purposes and plans, the end revealing Him as the Author of our pasts and the Architect of our outcomes and not their subject or pawn. The ability of thanksgiving is impervious to hinderances and the possibilities of its power being made void...not because the outcome (whatever it might be) can never affect, move, or devastate me, but rather...because the outcome cannot ultimately affect, move, or devastate God. I am able to give God thanks IN every-thing.
Like, if I have not stumbled today, I ought to give Him thanks for mercifully protecting me. But if I do stumble, I ought to give Him thanks for faithfully providing me His redeeming power; His blood that marks me deeper and is stronger, than the stain of my sin.
