It is not enough that one has a (reverential) fear and devotion to the Lord. They must also be built on a foundation of humility and mercy toward those who lack the fear of the Lord. Paul and Silas displayed this humility and longsuffering in confronting the unbelieving Lycaonians when they attempted to worship them. The first words out of their mouth weren't cynical or anger but this humble confession: "...We also are men with the same nature as you" (Acts 14:15) David displayed the same toward Saul, Absalom, and others who persecuted him: "But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother." (Psalm 35:13-14)
We cannot be holy (set apart & pleasing to the Lord) apart from humility. The two go hand in hand. God is Most Holy and He is Most Humble. If we are to be imitators of Him as dear children, we are to imitate Him, not only in His Holiness but also in His Humility.
