Tsukasa POV
His words.
"Love, do you believe that yōkai can fall in love?"
He had such an endearing tone when asking me that.
If I had myself figured out by then, maybe I would have answered with a simple response. "Yes."
But, of course, I hadn't. Before meeting Rui, I was so heartbroken. I thought that there could be no redemption for me, and I wholeheartedly believed that I would suffer alone.
After, I realized that having a friend like him was something I wasn't really prepared for. I kept him close, physically and emotionally. I didn't want to lose him.
Kamishiro Rui was no more than a very close friend to me at the time. I valued his companionship more than anything else, especially after being left alone for so long by the people I used to love.
"You feel something for me, don't you?"
.
.
.
"And... I guess I haven't been able to let go of what he said to me. What if I really do love him?"
"Well, Tsukasa, I think you should confront him about it! It won't hurt."
A friend of mine, Hinomori Shizuku, consoled me kindly. She looked into my eyes happily, making me feel heard. It's rare to find a yōkai who's understanding... I imagined how Rui might've responded to someone asking for help.
I scoffed and looked away from her with a pout. "Do you think I haven't considered that? Have you imagined how humiliating that would turn out..?"
Shizuku gave a sad sigh and brushed her light blue hair behind her ear. "Of course not," She started softly, "But it's what I truly think is best. If you'd prefer, I can do it for you." She offered.
"N-No..."
The light breeze hit my face, blowing my hair out of my face. In the close distance, I noticed a dark figure moving closer to us. A frown covered my features and I prepared for the worst.
I quickly raised my left hand, shading my eyes from my freely moving hair to see better. The being walked with slow, but calculated movements. There was no sun to shine down and illuminate its face, however, there was more to it.
Oh.
I relaxed my tense muscles and let my hand drop down to my side. My umbrella was tightly clutched in my right hand, which slacked as I let myself feel calm.
"Tanuki-kun! What a pleasant surprise~!" My closest yōkai friend, Rui, gave a grin that shimmered through the darkness.
I stepped closer and blinked slowly, feeling my heart swell. "Hello..." I felt my lips curl upwards involuntarily.
Rui let out a soft giggle that warmed me up. Something in my mind pressured me to hug him, but I refused. I usually hated showing intense affection, but it was nearing my favorite time of night.
"So, what're you doing around here? Your girlfriend disappeared before I had the chance to properly introduce myself." He playfully held onto me while speaking.
I frowned yet again and rolled my eyes. "She is not my girlfriend. I was discussing private matters with her, so don't even bother trying to get it out of me."
