Keith and Katie had met when they were both just six and five years old. They had both joined the community's basketball team within the same week. The group being mixed sex due to the small number of children joining and all of them too young to really separate just yet.
With both Keith and Katie being rather on the short side, neither was expected to hold much skill or grow very skilful. Something the bad tempered boy and very stubborn girl had decided to prove to be wrong.
Red and Green, the arms of the team that were almost unstoppable once they stood as a duo.
They completed each other and helped to gain a winning score.
Katie was fast, the best dribbler to be seen. She'd figure out her opponents moves before they even think to make them and avoid their every strike and block afterwards. Dribbling and getting the ball from the other team, passing them to her own teammates to score.
Katie was an unbreakable shield that rammed the enemy back.
Keith, he was just as fast and relied on mere instincts to deal with his opponents and were rarely wrong. He could block shots, acting as defence when needed and dunk hoops without any mercy as if he was slashing down his enemies.
With Katie stealing the ball and passing it to Keith and Keith cutting through their opponents before shooting, they were a powerful duo.
They held a few losses under their belts, no one learns from their mistakes if they never make them. So, mistakes were made and stronger teams had won against them. The two just practiced more and more together. Perfecting their movements to fall into perfect sink together.
Red and Green got their stronger opponents blood pumping, knowing neither would lose without a brutal fight first. And brought fear to those that stood weaker than them.
Basketball were both Keith and Katie's whole world.
Their older brothers were on teams and helped to practice with them. Leaving all four to play two against two on the public courts. Swapping teams ups to help everyone improve and learn from one another. To be able to work with new teams when needed and learn to grow as a person and as as a duo.
The two felt unstoppable.
Every game left them feel like they were stalking and hunting down prey together.
Their menacing smirks at the end of the game, if they won or lost, made them seem insane for years.
Keith had thought they'd stand as their duo forever, they'd forever rule the courts and take every team's crown for themselves.
But he was mistaken.
High school had came, both excited to join the basketball clubs.
Keith had entered the sports hall of their high school, looking around for his right hand. Ready to stand as her left hand yet again.
But he couldn't find her, filling with dread as he wondered if she got lost and was at risk of missing out on joining the club.
