Katie found herself to be forty-four years old now. She celebrated her thirty year anniversary of being a Hunter just over eight months ago. She felt her age, her body slowing down and she feels the strain of being a Hunter as long as she has. She was still physically fit for a Hunter of her age but she was still stuck with the aches and pains.

Buried her parents a couple of years ago, both died from being overworked in her eyes. Neither had lived long enough to find a way to close the gates forever. To stop the need of hunters for good.

Matthew and Shiro retired from being Hunter's. Both still working at their guild but helping to train newer hunters instead of closing gates. Hunk retiring just last year, he was never fit for the Hunter life and after so many bad days inside a gate, it was well deserved time to leave that life.

Lance joined a guild, going on lower ranked gates to help train newer hunters and give them real experience. Keeping them as safe as he could and no longer going on the more dangerous gate runs. He had a large family to look after now and Romelle wouldn't cope raising all their children alone if he didn't come back one day.

It left Katie and Keith a duo once more.

Just them as they joined other groups during Gate runs.

Most still felt frighten from her abilities but most felt relaxed, knowing that she could just bring them back from the dead. Something Katie wasn't keen on having as a mindset, she wanted people to still fight to live and not reply on a ghost life.

Keith grew stronger over the years, grew way past a S ranked Hunter level by now. And yet she still stayed with her, always had her back as she had his. He grew too famous to sneak off to a gate run as a ghost alone, he didn't want too many lives entrusted to him because he was strong.

Life was as content as they could both have it.

Their family and friends were safe and happy.

Their Hunter life was going well.

And they both got to stay together.

It's what they wanted, to both stay.

So, Keith couldn't blame her when they finally found the final boss for all gates and she hesitated to slice of his head with her shields.

The moment the boss died, the gates would forever close and never appear again. Hunters would lose all their abilities and would no longer be needed.

All her soldiers summoned would be gone forever.

Keith would be lost to her all over again.

But Keith was always a lot kinder than others first assumed.

He wouldn't force people to grow into Hunters, to keep fighting this endless war forever.

So, he gave Katie the nod to drop her shield and slam it against the final bosses neck.
