A/N: Ah, yes. Another Nutcracker Au for Kidge. I'm sure you're all sick of them by now but what can I say? I just love and adore Nutcracker's Au's. I'd say this one is more inspired by the Nutcracker and Four Realms, finally watched it. Found a dvd of it and bought it before finally watching it this year.

Side Ships: Hunay. Shadam. Lance x Romelle.

Katie liked to create, to build and tinker. To be more brain than beauty. Her parents encouraged her to be herself instead of a mere wife to her future husband or a doll like mother to her future children. She was told to show spirit, to be alive and not some puppet for another to pull on her strings.

It's why she got along so well with Lance. She had met him during her public schooling. Most was outraged to learn that the Holt family of nobility would dare to send both their children to public school instead of private or even to hire private tutors. But Sam wanted his children to learn the real world, to let his children learn humanity and personality. He wasn't going to allow neither his son nor his daughter to be taught to be rich, greed and power. Colleen still hired private tutors for her two children, letting them learn the way to be a noble and the things a public school wouldn't teach her children that were needed to know in their standing.

But otherwise, Matthew Holt and Katie Holt were raised as if they were poor and both loved it. Always thrilled to invite their friend's round during holidays and using their pocket money for all to have fun and be in good cheer. Never flaunting their money for their friends, using it for both their own gains.

Katie had met Lance, who stood as her best friend even when he was working as the carriage driver for her family. He was paid well and he held a room inside the Holt's home just as any other servant did. All sleeping in what most would assume was a guest room but all given one to have as their own. No servant were a mere worker, they were welcomed to the Holt family with open arms and treated as such.

It meant even as Katie stood as a fully grown women now, meant to be thinking over marriage and setting down to birth heirs. She and Lance was still as much of a handful as they were as children.

Hence, Katie had snuck out to try out a music box she had been trying to fix up and Lance was trying to paint the last of the nutcrackers he had gotten one of the other servants to carve for all his family members. Painting them himself and letting all his love ones have their own hand sized nutcracker to guard and protect them for him.

Katie was rather interested over her friend's present but didn't question it much. Nor did she laugh over it. He never laughed at her in bad nature and always supported her own odd ways in life. It was only fair she did the same.

The pair had been busy with their own thing while chattering away happily together. The snow had yet to fallen but both was dressed for the winter the season was. Knowing it was a terrible idea to be outside after curfew but knowing they wouldn't wake anyone this way and get caught being up still.

Time both had started to return towards the Holt house, both had leaped back in fright as someone suddenly sprinting out from one bush to another before them. Neither wanting to face a wild animal and awkwardly went to shuffle around a tree to avoid both bushes. In doing so, they were left stumbling backwards after stripping on their own feet when four mice jumped out from behind the tree instead.
