When Katie woke in the hospital, six months had already past.
Her shield stood without her sword.
The cold that came from her right side had left her more broken than anything she's ever faced before in her hunter years.
She was only Twenty-three, she wasn't meant to keep facing such close losses just yet. He wasn't meant to leave her like this, to die young and leave her forced to live on without him for so long.
They were to stand together or fall together.
He left her alone, something he knew she'd struggle to survive.
Shiro and Adam would still visit every Sunday, not going to cut ties or their makeshift tradition she and Keith had began in their early Hunter days together.
Adam use to scold them for leaving all the roast cooking to him on whatever Sunday they'd be home after a gate run. Leaving them both snickering and keeping far from the kitchen, knowing Adam would snatch them both and drag them inside to help.
Matt stepped up to help Adam cook once he was healed up. His left leg gone forever but he got his sister to help him invent and build up a rather amazing prosthetic leg for him to use instead. Making an arm for Shiro too.
Leaving the two families to stay mingled as one as they ate together. Passing on how their week's been or any Hunter stories safe enough to talk about while eating. Adam mentioning his own work whenever something funny or good happened at the Guild he worked for, one neither Shiro or Matt worked under.
The first Sunday without Keith was the worse roast Katie had ever eaten. It tasted rotten, left her mouth filled with sand and she threw it all back up before the rest even got half way through the meal.
Keith's chair left empty, no plate in front of it and none had even dared to pretended he might come home someday.
Katie and Keith held hope their brothers would return because there wasn't an conformed death by a witness. Katie saw Keith die, she was the evidence he'd never return home ever again.
Shiro had talked with her in private after a month had passed from her release of hospital. Understanding survivors guilt and having witnessed many fellow Hunters die before his very eyes in his life.
Talking to her as the adult and experienced Hunter she was, even in her young age. She had almost reached her ten year anniversary as a Hunter, to be sent a large bonus of money and one free hunter gift. Either armour, weapon or a magical item. None got to chose what their gift was.
Shiro had talked more than she did, tried to help her. Offering support and advise. Mentioning that it was perfectly fine to quit being a Hunter after what she had survived. Reminding her that both he and Adam would stay as much of a family to her as Matt was, always would.
