Closing his eyes the Half-Monarch leans back in his throne as the corner of his lips curl upwards.
He knew all too well just how difficult it is to walk down the path that he had chosen.
[...]
[...]
Simultaneously both the Half-Monarch and Ye Gui Feng raised their heads and looked to the same spot and it is there that a road manifests.
This road is made entirely out of stone with its end nowhere in sight as it can seemingly stretch for an infinite number of miles.
Seeing this road the first thought that crosses Ye Gui Feng's mind is a Dao Road and yet the vibe it gives off is very different from the typical Dao Road of an Exalted Celestial.
If a modern Exalted Celestial's Dao Road is considered incomplete in the eyes of the ancient practitioners then this road would be considered a perfected piece of work.
"..."
Similar to the two Xuan Nuo also directs his gaze towards the stone path. The archaic air that exudes from the path causes his scalps to tingle for this very structure is something that he recognized.
"*Sigh*"
Turning his eyes to the far ends of the stone road and seeing the traditional gate that is present Xuan Nuo raises a sigh.
The name of the stone road that should be written into the gate's crown had been wiped away and in its place are several gashes that looks to have been made by the claws of a vicious beast.
[.........]
Seeing the familiar road of stone the Half-Monarch thought back to when he had taken his first step upon its body.
It would be difficult to say just how much time had passed since then but he can readily recall that he has been stuck on the current step for more than a 10,000 years now.
And having calculated just how much time it would take for him to take the step that comes after the current step the Half-Monarch had come to a single conclusion.
It is impossible for a single person to walk through the entirety of this path from beginning to end as it was always meant for multiple individuals to walk through it together.
But the relationship of those who are walking down this path cannot possibly be harmonious for only one of them can become the Eternal. Thus it is only by consuming the other walkers of this path would one be able to have a smoother rate of progression on their journey towards the end.
Knowing that each advancement would only make the journey more difficult the Half-Monarch felt all the more grateful towards the answer that Ye Gui Feng had given him.
The two options that he had presented Ye Gui Feng with were merely a means of probing his determination.
Without a powerful force of will that can allow a person to grit through the harsh struggles of walking down this path it would be impossible for them to make progressive advancements in the long run.
Perhaps this could be seen as nothing more than a cheap form of provocation but it was the easiest and most direct means to test a person's character when they are pushed to the edge.
Had Ye Gui Feng had been calmer about the circumstances he might have been able to figure out the underlying significance that is hidden in the Half-Monarch's words.
But even if Ye Gui Feng did would his choice change? Regardless of the Half-Monarch's schemes he would have surely chosen to turn his most treasured Moment into an eternity rather than to be the slave of someone else.
Naturally the Half-Monarch also knows the risks involved with this plan. Should things go wrong he could be the one that is consumed by Ye Gui Feng instead. However to him the risks outweighs the possible benefits by far.
[The longevity of all lifeforms are finite for we are prisoners of the cage known as the cycles of living. Here and now I wish to be enlightened upon the meanings of a free world that knows no god and overcome the calamities to be rewarded with the rights to escape this prison by my will.]
*...!!!* following the mutters of the Half-Monarch a pulse comes from the far corners of the universe as if to answer his wishes.
[Uh?]
Within a split second this pulse reaches Ye Gui Feng as he felt a heavy load of weight being pressed upon his head.
Almost as if an ancient will is being called upon to awaken the world seemingly trembles in fear.
"How is this possible...?"
This ancient will is something that Xuan Nuo is all too familiar with and the moment he picks up on it his complexion pales. In that instance all the thoughts that he had from before is seemingly shattered by an invisible fist as uncertainty wells up in his heart once more.
[...]
The first person that this ancient will locks onto is none other than the Half-Monarch who shows no changes on his composed expression. In the far past he has felt the presence of this ancient will numerous times and he has all but become numb to its existence.
It didn't take long for the gaze of the ancient will to move away from the Half-Monarch as it leans onto Ye Gui Feng.
[...]
Feeling the pressuring gaze of this ancient will looking down from above a strange notion wells up in Ye Gui Feng's heart to compare it to his Fall of the Exalted Celestials.
There is something about the pressure of this will that felt very similar to it as it can seemingly suppress the cultivation of those it looks upon through a means that is uniquely theirs alone.
But before Ye Gui Feng can think too deeply into this matter an image appears in his head.
Within this image Ye Gui Feng sees the figure of a young man dressed in a white set of robes standing over a cliff that is overlooking the entirety of a vast kingdom.
Even from a distance away one can readily tell just how lively this kingdom is as the streets are filled with the movements of both mortals and practitioners alike.
Had Xuan Nuo been able to see this image he would surely be able to recognize this kingdom immediately for it is none other than the center piece of the original Half-Monarch's world.
(Three inches over my head is a godless heaven, three inches beneath my feet are the mortal realms. Here and now I stand at the very center of heaven and earth overlooking its entirety for an eternity.)
A trace of gloominess can be picked up in the young man's tone as he stands at the edge of this cliff and momentarily-
(...)
The young man turns his head around.
The face of the young man is unclear but his eyes are similar to the stars of a night sky whose radiance can cut through even the densest sheet of darkness.
Nothing was reflected in the young man's star like eyes other than the scenery behind him but the way he is looking so intently behind his back made Ye Gui Feng feel as if this young man was staring straight at him.
(Is this what means to be Eternal?)
The moment this question is asked by the young man Ye Gui Feng's conscience is pulled out of this memory as he looks around in a puzzled manner.
[...]
The ancient will from before had seemingly vanished as well and raising his head Ye Gui Feng is met with the eerie smile of the Half-Monarch.
