*Falcon and the Winter Soldier*
This was a bad idea. You weren't ready. The mood wasn't right. Your eyes were probably still swollen from crying. The stars weren't in the right position. But most importantly; You weren't ready.
After returning from the Blip, all you wanted to do was curl up in your bed and stay there for forever but your friends—who didn't vanish—insisted that you get out there, even going as far as creating an online dating profile for you.
Apparently people really liked what your friends put there because you got tons of matches and you were currently sitting in a cafe, waiting for one of the people your friends chose for you.
You were tapping your fingertips against your mug and looking around, secretly hoping that your date would stand you up but alas, he did not.
A good looking man with short, dark hair and a stubble stood across from you.
"Hi, are you Y/N Y/L/N?" he asked.
"Yeah, I am," you responded.
"Nice to meet you, ma'am. I'm Bucky Barnes — your date," he said before sitting down.
For some reason that name sounded familiar to you and you could've sworn you'd seen his face before but you just couldn't place it.
"Nice to meet you too, Bucky," you smiled awkwardly.
He also smiled back but his smile looked weird, as though he wasn't used to it. It was kind of amusing to you so you chuckled under your breath.
"So, uh... is this your first time online dating?" he asked you.
"Yeah, it is," you responded while looking down at your mug. "Is it yours?"
"Mhm," he hummed in agreement. "I'm not much of an internet user. I've never even had a mobile phone until a few weeks ago."
"Wait, really?" you asked, finally looking at him.
"Yeah, the 30s weren't exactly the golden age of technology. Well, unless you count all the stuff Stark made."
And that was when it hit you. That's why he looked so familiar. You knew his face.
"You're James Buchanan Barnes," you said. "Oh my god. I can't believe it."
For a moment, Bucky got worried. He thought that you were going to bring up his past as the Winter Soldier and that was the last thing he wanted.
"I've seen you at the Captain America exhibit. You were... well, are amazing. I wrote my college history paper on you, got an A plus," you bragged. "It was my last."
Bucky chuckled a bit and you laughed.
"Last in History, anyways but honestly, that was just because I dropped out. I can guarantee you if I kept going, I would've gotten a solid C minus."
Bucky chuckled again but this time, more enthusiastically. Seeing him like this made you feel better for some reason.
"So, why the online dating?" you asked.
Bucky then stopped smiling and you immediately regretted asking.
"You don't have to answer if you don't want to."
"No, it's fine," Bucky said. "I don't know why actually. I guess I just..."
He sighed and looked down his hands.
"I lost someone really important to me recently. Someone who always saw the best in me even when the of the world and I didn't. And I guess I just wanted to get out there and start living again.
I'm trying to put my past behind me and move forward, even started going to therapy but it's hard, you know? I feel like no matter what I do, no matter what I try, I'm always going to be that guy and I don't want to be."
You don't know why but you reached over and placed your hands over his. He looked at you and you saw that he was on the verge of tears.
"I also lost someone special to me because of the Blip — my husband," you said. "I was a part of the people who disappeared and apparently while I was gone, he got sick. Really sick. And when I came back, he had already died."
Tears started rolling down your face.
"All I could think about was him going through all of that pain by himself, hoping that I would come back but I never did. I never came back, not even towards the end.
It's only been a few months but my friends insisted that I start seeing other people because it's what he would've wanted. This date is the first time I've left my house since I've been back."
"Oh yeah? And how's it going so far?" Bucky asked, trying to lift the mood.
You chuckled while wiping away your tears with your right hand.
"Pretty good," you told him.
He smiled and sniffled, also wiping his tears away.
"Good, good. I'm glad to hear that."
"Yeah, so am I."
