Part 2 to 'Maybe One Day'
You were preparing dinner for you, Bucky and Steve while they set the table in the dining room.
"I still can't believe that you, James Buchanan Barnes, are engaged," Steve chuckled.
You walked into the room and placed some food in the table.
"You and me both, Stevie," you said. "You are such a lady-killer, Barnes. I was sure that you would never settle down and with me no less."
"What can I say, doll? Cupid hit me with precision. You're the one that's always running through my daydreams and I can only ever see your face when I close my eyes," Bucky told you, wrapping his arms around your waist.
"Save it for our vows, Barnes. You are such a charmer," you giggled.
"Only for you," Bucky smiled.
"I feel like I shouldn't be here right now," Steve said.
"Aw, Stevie, you must so left out. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll meet the person of your dreams eventually."
"If you say so, Y/N," Steve said.
You smiled and kissed him on the cheek before heading back into the kitchen to get the rest of dinner.
"I like seeing you like this, Buck," Steve smiled.
"Like what?" Bucky asked.
"In love. Happy," Steve smiled.
Bucky grinned widely and started blushing.
"She's really special, Steve. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with her," Bucky said.
"Have you told her yet?"
"Told me what?" you asked, walking back into the room.
Bucky and Steve suddenly kept quiet, like they were hiding something big from you.
You placed the last of dinner on the table and turned to face them.
"Tell me what, Bucky?" you asked but he never replied. "Tell me what, Steve?"
"Would you look at the time, I really have to get going," Steve lied before quickly leaving the apartment.
"Bucky, what's wrong?" you asked him.
"I think you might need to sit down for this, doll," he said.
You started getting worried but still sat down. Bucky kneeled down so that you two could be face to face and he took both of your hands in his.
"Buck, you're scaring me. What's going on?"
"I got drafted."
"What?" you asked him.
"I'm leaving next week," he told you.
You took your hands out of his and stood up.
"How long have you known?" you asked him.
"Y/N, I'm sorry-"
"Did you know when you proposed to me?"
".... Yes, I did," Bucky answered.
"So you asked me to marry you, knowing you were going to die?"
"That's not true," Bucky disagreed.
"Then what is, James? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you proposed to me and gave me hope for a future together, a future that will never happen!
What about all of our plans? What about kids? A house? Getting married? That's never going to happen now because you're gonna go to Germany and never come back! And you don't even care! "
"You don't think I care? Of course I care, Y/N. You're the love of my life, the best thing that's ever happened to me and I might not make it back to you! You don't think that very thought destroys me? It does!" Bucky retaliated. "Yes, maybe it was wrong of me to propose to you while knowing that I had been drafted but it also gave me hope. Hope that I will live long enough for us to get married."
"What if you don't come back?" you cried.
Bucky walked towards you and took you into his arms. You could see tears welling up in his eyes as well.
"I don't know, Y/N but I know that I'm about to go war and I don't know if I will see you again. But I swear, I'm going to do all I can to make it back to you," Bucky promised.
"Can I get a kiss?" you pleaded. "And can you find a way to make it last forever?"
Bucky kissed you like it was the last time he'll ever get to do so. When you two pulled apart, you rested your foreheads on each other and just stayed in each other's arms, not wanting to ever let go.
