*Captain America*

You were gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. Hands down, the most beautiful woman Bucky had ever laid his eyes on. But, there was one itty bitty little issue; he couldn't have you.

Well, he could but it was highly unlikely. You were a black woman and he was a white man. The world would try everything in its power to keep you two apart but that didn't stop James Buchanan Barnes. It didn't even deter him. He wanted — no, needed to be with you.

You were just innocently enjoying the shade of the tree you were sitting under in the park, writing in your notebook when you felt someone tap your shoulder. You turned around but there was nobody there. When you turned back you saw Bucky smiling back at you.

"Morning, doll," he greeted.

You looked at your empty wrist mockingly then raised an eyebrow at him.

"Morning?" you questioned.

Bucky playfully rolled his eyes.

"Okay, okay. I'm late but in my defense, I was too busy trying to pick a flower to match your beauty."

You looked at him and saw that he had nothing with him.

"Where's the flower?" you asked.

"Well, it hit me; no such flower exists," he smiled.

Your upset facade melted away and a wide grin filled your face and you tried to hide your face away from him.

"Ah, there's that smile."

"James Barnes," you blushed "You are such a charmer."

"Only for you, doll," he said.

You moved your notebook off your lap and patted the empty space. Bucky gently laid his head on your lap and let out a relaxing sigh. You began rubbing circles on his chest.

"This is what living is all about," he said.

"Oh, yeah?" you asked. "What's that?"

"Spending a beautiful sunny day in the park with my best gal, figuring out a way to ask her to marry me."

You immediately stopped your movements and Bucky lifted his head from your lap.

"What?" you asked, tears brimming your eyes.

He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a silver diamond ring.

"Will you marry me?" he asked.

Without a second thought, you nodded.

"Yes."

He smiled widely and placed the ring on your finger.

"It was my mother's," he told you. "If she were still alive she'd be so happy. She would've loved you."

Your smile slowly disappeared.

"Y/N? What's wrong, doll?"

"We can't," you simply said.

"What do you mean 'we can't'?" he asked you.

"We can't," you repeated. "We literally can't. It's against the law. Couples like us ain't allowed to get married."

"Right," Bucky realized.

"Yeah," you agreed.

The smile came back onto his face but this time it was a comforting one and he held your left hand.

"Even though that is the stupidest thing of all time, one day, the stupidity will end or at the very least, decrease and when it does, we'll get married. I promise you."

You pulled him in for a kiss and when you pulled away you smiled back at him.

"I love you, James."

"I love you too, Y/N."
