*How I Met Your Mother*

Ted was sitting in the gang's usual booth in MacLaren's by himself since everyone else had something more important to do. He had come here immediately after Robin and Barney's reception had ended so everyone else was still there.

He looked at the tv and saw an odd advertisement that he'd never seen before.

A man was sitting on a porch with his wife in his backyard while their children ran around laughing. He looked at the camera and said, "Your future starts today."

Ted scoffed before muttering, "Yeah, right." and walking out of the warm, cosy bar and into the cold, rainy night.

"Oh, come on!" he exclaimed in frustration.

He then went to hail for a cab but instead got wet by a puddle, courtesy of a speeding car.

"Really? My mouth was open!"

When a cab did finally stop for him, he was pushed out of the way by a man who was clearly in a rush and ended up falling face first into the pavement.

He rolled over onto his back and yelled out,

"Really, Universe? Is that it?!  Is that the best you can do? What's next? Getting struck by lightning? You already took my best friends so do your worst because I am done with you! So go ahead, strike me where I stand... lay!"

He closed his eyes and waited for something to happen but nothing did. There was no thunder, no lightning and no rain hitting his face. He opened his eyes and saw a woman with a yellow umbrella, standing over him and looking at him weirdly.

"You okay there, bud?" she asked him.

"No," Ted shook his head.

She giggled and reached her hand out to him, which he gladly took. She helped him up and when he saw her face to face, he saw how beautiful she really was.

She wore a yellow raincoat that matched her umbrella and complimented her beautiful brown skin, E/C eyes that had a certain shine to them and H/C hair styled in an elegant updo. She also looked really familiar.

"Hey, do I know you?" Ted asked her.

"I don't think so. I'm pretty sure I would've remembered you, Mr Rain Man."

Ted noticed the strap that went across her torso and the bass that it was connected to.

"Wait, a minute. You're her," he said. "You're the roommate, the bass player."

"Did you hit your head really hard?" she asked him.

"No," Ted laughed. "At least I don't think so but I know you. I used to date your roommate and she told me all about you. I'm Ted Moseby."

He held out his hand for her to shake which she took.

"I'm Y/N Y/L/N," she said. "You can call me Y/N."

"Hey, you stole my umbrella," Ted said.

"Excuse me?" Y/N asked. "You stole it first!"

"I don't seem to remember that," he denied.

"Oh, really? Well, Ted Moseby it seems as though we have ourselves some conflict."

"It does seem that way."

"How about we solve it? I have nowhere else to be tonight," Y/N subtly hinted.

"Me neither," Ted replied.

"Well, there's this bar that I've heard of — MacLaren's. Wanna go there and resolve our issues?"

"I'd love to," Ted smiled.

"And then they lived happily ever after," Ted said.

"Ted," Y/N said in a warning tone.

"What? Can't a guy dream?" he asked her.

"He can but eventually he has to wake up," Y/N told him.

She reached out and held Ted's hand in hers. She kissed it while a tear ran down her face.

"To this day, that's still my favourite story of ours," she said.

"Yeah," Ted nodded while tears started running down his eyes. "Mine too."

"However, the story of me finding that potato chip that looked like Abraham Lincoln is a close second though," Y/N joked.

Ted laughed but that didn't stop the tears from falling. There was still some sadness in his eyes.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," she told him. "This might be the end of our story—"

"Don't say that," Ted interrupted.

"You know it's true."

Y/N placed her other hand on Ted's face and wiped some of his tears away. He leaned into her hand and placed his free hand on top of hers.

"This might be the end of our story but it's not the end of yours. The kids are going to need you to be there for them and I know it's going to be hard but never give up, okay? Even when it feels hopeless just know that I'm going to be there for you. I'll always be there for you."

Ted nodded and kissed her forehead.

"I love you so much," Y/N told him. "You know that, right?"

"I know. I love you too."

"Mr Moseby, visiting hours are over," a nurse said.

"Oh, come on. Just ten more minutes. Please?" Ted pleaded.

"That's what you said an hour ago, Mr Moseby," the nurse said.

"I know but what if while I'm gone, something happens and..." Ted paused, not even wanting to say it.

"Ted, it's okay," you smiled sadly. "It's okay."

"But—"

"I love you, Mr Rain Man," she interrupted, knowing it might be the last thing she ever says to him.

"I love you too, Roommate," he said back, his voice cracking a little bit.

"Come on, Mr Moseby. It's time to go."

The car on Ted's ride home was quiet except for the sounds of him crying and some quiet music over the radio.
