It was really early in the morning when you realized the bed was empty. Really early. 2:15 to be precise.
You weren't shocked, just worried. This had been happening a lot recently. Bill waking up in the morning and then leaving. At first you thought that he just wanted his space and then decided to leave him alone but after a while, you couldn't take it anymore.
Letting out a deep sigh, you got out of your warm comfortable bed and placed your feet on the cold hardwood floor. You slipped on your slippers and started searching the house for your husband.
You finally found him in your son's nursery. He was standing over his crib, just watching him sleep.
"Bill?" you questioned softly.
He turned around, scared for a moment but calmed down when he saw it was just you. He turned back to the crib and carried on watching your son.
You walked up to him and wrapped your arms around his waist. He placed his hands on your arms and closed his eyes.
"Why are you here?" you asked him.
"I had a nightmare," he whispered back.
"What happened in the nightmare?"
"I was in the house but I wasn't myself. I was him," he hissed.
You knew 'him' was Pennywise. Bill hadn't been the same since he shot It and it didn't help that you two had an infant son.
"I walked up to the nursery and saw you sitting in the rocking chair in the corner but your throat was slit open and I did it to you," he stopped to catch his breath and continued. "Then I looked into Cairen's crib and I saw him sleeping peacefully. I reached over and held his tiny body in my arms. I knew what I was about to do so I tried to stop but I couldn't."
He started crying. You pulled away from the hug and lifted his chin so he could look at you.
"It's okay, Bill. It's okay."
"But it's not!" he exclaimed and Cairen started to stir in his sleep. "It's not okay. It's not."
He dropped to his knees and hid his face in his hands. You got onto your knees as well and hugged him.
"Shh, it was just a nightmare," you reassured. "See? Cairen is still alive. You didn't do anything to him."
"I know, but it felt so real," he cried.
You stood up and and took your son out of his crib. You got back onto your knees gently handed him to Bill.
"See? He's okay," you said.
Cairen started stirring in his sleep a little until his eyes opened up slowly. He let out a little yawn and once he saw his dad was holding him, he started making grabby hands at his face.
Bill smiled a little and let out a small chuckle.
"Hi, my little angel. How did you sleep?" he asked.
Cairen made baby noises that sounded like he was trying to answer.
"That's good to hear."
He placed a kiss on his forehead which caused him to giggle happily. Cairen was definitely a daddy's boy but you didn't mind as long as they were both happy.
"Daddy loves you okay," he said to him.
Cairen cuddled into his chest and started drifting off again. Bill looked up at you, gratefully.
"Thank you," he said.
"You're welcome," you said.
You kissed him and Cairen on the cheek before leaving the nursery and going back to bed.
