*Prodigal Son*
"I mean, Eve knew what she was getting into when she agreed to go on a date with me. Didn't she?" Malcolm asked.
I, on the other hand, couldn't care less about what he was saying. My lunch seemed more interesting than this conversation.
"What do you think, Y/N?" he finally asked.
"I think, people typically eat lunch when they meet up for lunch," I answered sarcastically.
A little air escaped Malcolm's nose in humour.
"Can't we talk about something else? Literally anything else. Global warming, sunsets, whatever it is you do at work."
"Oh, come on. You know what I do at work," Malcolm said.
I just stared back at him blankly.
"You don't know what I do for a living? Twenty years of friendship and you don't know what I do for a living."
I just shrugged.
"Oh, don't turn this into a whole thing. It's not like you know what I do for living anyways," I stated.
"You work as a consultant at the local bank which is a total waste because not only are you the most intelligent person I know but you're also the most creative, beautiful and just all around extraordinary," Malcolm said, looking into my eyes the entire time.
I felt a deep heat traveling to my cheeks and engulfing my whole body. Trying to avoid Malcolm's intense eyes, I looked at my watch and saw that I was ten minutes late.
I quickly stood up and gathered my stuff.
"You want to know what I really think about your whole situation with Eve?" I asked rhetorically. "I'm shocked actually. Shocked that you asked her out first."
Malcolm gave me a confused look.
"First? What do you mean?"
I felt like rolling my eyes right then but I stopped myself.
"I mean, I thought that after all these years you would ask me out as more than a friend," I admitted.
"Why would I do that?" he asked obliviously.
This time I actually did roll my eyes and let out a scoff.
"Oh my goodness, you are so oblivious, Malcolm Whitly. Anyway, I've go to go. I'm late to work."
And with that I walked out, not even bothering to look back.
TIME SKIP
2nd POVMalcolm walked into his childhood home, feeling incredibly troubled.
"Well, hello to you too, Malcolm," his mother greeted sarcastically. "How am I? Oh, I'm wonderful. Thanks for—"
"Now's not the time for sarcastic small talk, mother," Malcolm interrupted. "Did you know that Y/N has had a crush on me for a while?"
"Of course I knew, Malcolm," she admitted. "Didn't you?"
"No, I didn't," he answered.
"Well, I don't blame you. She hid it incredibly well. I only found out because she drunkenly blurted it out at one of her parents' charity events."
"And you didn't think to tell me?" Malcolm asked.
"Figured it wasn't my place," Jessica shrugged. "If it means anything, I always thought you two would make a lovely couple."
"I should've noticed something that big. I'm —"
"An excellent profiler?" Jessica suggested.
"Her best friend," he sighed in defeat. "I've gotta fix this."
ANOTHER TIME SKIP
Your POV"Thank you for coming to the bank, ma'am. Enjoy the rest of your day," I smiled at the sweet old lady in front of me.
"Thank you, sweetie. Enjoy your day too," she said while leaving.
As soon as she slid out of her seat, Malcolm slid in.
"Malcolm!" I exclaimed. "What are you doing here?" I asked him.
"I'm here to apologise," he answered.
"For what?"
"Everything. Not noticing your feelings, not asking you out and most importantly, not telling you that I feel the same," he explained.
"What?" I asked.
"I feel the same way but I never said anything because you were too good of a friend and if we got romantically involved, you would've realised how much of a mess I really am and you would've left. I couldn't have that because you are one of the only good things going on in my life."
I reached over and grabbed Malcolm's hand.
"Malcolm, I've always known you were a mess. We've been best friends since childhood. Nothing could ever scare me away," I told him.
He smiled at me and his blue eyes shined with excitement.
"So, will you go out with me?" he asked.
"No," I replied.
His face dropped.
"What?"
"Malcolm, you have so much going on in your life right now and I don't want to add onto that stress. I love you and if I could wait all these years for you just to notice it then I'm sure I can wait a little while longer."
He nodded in understanding and smiled at me.
"Thanks, Y/N."
"No problem, Whitly."
