*The Sun is Also A Star*
You were laying down in your childhood treehouse, looking at the stars, knowing that it would be the last time you saw them like this.
"What are you thinking about?" a voice asked you.
You would've screamed had you not known that it was Daniel. He liked doing that, just showing up out of nowhere and hanging out.
"Nothing," you lied, sitting up.
He climbed into your treehouse and scooted right next to you.
"What did you bring me this time, Bae?" you asked him.
"Me," he answered but he saw that you were unhappy with that answer so he laughed. "First of all, ouch."
He reached into his satchel and pulled out some Skittles.
"Second of all, I got you Skittles."
You gasped and reached out for them but Daniel pulled his hand back.
"Nope, you know the deal," he said.
You groaned and turned to him with an annoyed expression.
"I'm not doing it," you deadpanned.
"Fine, then I guess you're not getting any Skittles," he retorted.
"Fine," you sighed.
You got on your knees and crawled to the part of your treehouse where you kept your secret stash.
"Are your eyes closed?" you asked Daniel.
"Yep," he replied. "Although, I don't really see the point. We've been best friends for ten years, I know where your secret stash is."
"Just let me have this, okay?" you questioned.
"Okay, okay."
You grabbed your poetry book and crawled back over to Daniel.
"You can open your eyes now," you told him.
"You know, I think I'd rather keep them closed so I can truly visualize the masterpiece that I am about to hear," Daniel said.
"Oh my god, you're so weird," you laughed but Daniel just shrugged. "Which one do you want to hear today?"
"How about 'Wandering Soul'?" he suggested.
"Again?"
"What can I say? I know what I want."
"Okay then," you said.
You cleared your throat and began reading.
"Wandering soul, where are you?
And why can't you stay in one place?
I just want to get to know you
And see your faceWandering soul, do you ever think about me?
Do you ever wonder about which book I'm reading?
Who I hang out with?
Or even my mental well-being?Wandering soul, was the journey really worth it?
Did you get everything you've ever wanted?
Because you never really leave my mind
And now I feel haunted."By the time you were done, Daniel was looking at you in amazement.
"Why?" you asked him.
"Why what?" he asked back.
"Why do you always look at me like that when I'm done reading my poetry?"
"I don't know. Why shouldn't I?"
"I don't know!" you exclaimed. "Because it makes me feel weird."
"Weird how?"
"Dude, just give me my Skittles," you demanded.
"Okay, okay. Here, have your Skittles," he said before handing them over.
You opened up the packet, had some and tilted it over to Daniel as a way to offer them to him. He took a few and looked at the stars with you.
"You never answered my question," he said out of the blue.
"What question?"
"When I first got here and I asked you what you were thinking about," he told you.
"Yes, I did. I said I was thinking about nothing."
"Okay, let me rephrase. You never answered me honestly," Daniel responded. "So, I'll ask again. What are you thinking about?"
You turned to face him and saw that he was staring at you, waiting for an answer. You sat in front of him criss-cross applesauce and he did the same.
"I'm moving the day after tomorrow," you told him.
"What?"
"Yeah, my dad got a new job and it's in England so that's where we're going," you explained.
"Isn't there something you can do?" he asked.
"Like what, Daniel? I've already tried everything and I'm still trying everything. Tomorrow, I have a meeting with someone to see if I can get emancipated."
"Don't you need your parents to be on board with that too?"
"I don't know, okay? That's why I'm having the meeting, so I can get a better understanding of it."
"Say you do get emancipated, what then? Where are you going to live? Who are you going to live with? How are you gonna afford school? Are you gonna keep going to school?"
"Woah there! Take a breather, Bae," you laughed. "I'm gonna live with my aunt, who stays about 6 miles away. I am going to keep going to school and she said that she's willing to pay for school."
"6 miles away?" Daniel repeated.
"Is that the only thing you heard from that?"
"What time is your meeting tomorrow?"
"11:30," you answered. "Why?"
"And what time does your flight take off on Sunday?"
"13:00," you answered again. "Again I ask, why? What are you up to, Daniel Bae?"
"I am going to get you to fall in love with me before you leave," he told you.
"Excuse me, what?" you questioned with a laugh.
"Yep, I have about 24 hours or so with you before you leave and I'm going to spend them trying to get you to fall in love with me."
"Well, what if I'm already in love with you?" you asked, without really thinking.
Daniel's eyes lit up and smiled at you.
"Then you'd be in love with me times two," he shrugged. "In love squared, if you will."
"I will not."
"Come on, Y/N. Tomorrow might be the last day we have with each other. Even if you don't fall in love, at least it's an excuse to be together for 24 hours," he pleaded.
"Don't you have some sort of college interview thing tomorrow?" you asked.
"I can go there and still spend time with you," he replied. "Come on, please."
You sighed, knowing you were going to lose this fight.
"Okay, fine. Let's do it."
