Ever since the news on George Floyd broke out and the protests began you've been acting... different. You were more quiet, stayed in bed more often and barely ate anything which was potentially dangerous because you're five months pregnant.

All you could think about was how you were bringing your baby boy into a world where he wouldn't be accepted and hunted for sport because of the colour of his skin. Nick only thought that you were distressed because another innocent black man had been killed for nothing. He didn't know that you were scared for your unborn child.

Nick walked into your room and expected to see you in bed but surprisingly, you weren't there. Instead, you were sitting on a chair on the balcony overlooking your backyard.

Nick walked to the balcony and sat on the chair next to yours. He placed the plate of food he was carrying on the coffee table in front of you.

"Here you go," he said.

"I'm not hungry," you mumbled.

"Come on, babe. Please," he pleaded. "You don't even have to eat all of it. Just a couple of bites. That's all."

You sighed and reluctantly picked up a piece of toast then took a few bites of it. Nick passed you some water and you took a few sips.

"Thank you," he said.

You didn't respond. You just kept staring into the distance with a far off look in your eyes while gently rubbing your belly.

"What's wrong, Y/N?" Nick asked you.

"I don't know what you're talking about," you lied.

"Don't lie to me. Something is definitely wrong. Ever since the day we heard the news and the protests began, you haven't been yourself lately. It's been weeks now, you haven't been getting better. Think of our son."

"Think of our son?" you repeated. "That's all I've been doing is thinking of our son. I've been thinking about how from the moment he's born he'll immediately be seen as a target by police and certain white people because of the colour of his skin. I've been thinking about how when the world sees our son, they won't see you. They'll see me. And he will be hunted because of that. I don't know if you've noticed, Nick but I am a bringing a black man into this world. A world that doesn't want him. So forgive me for not 'acting like myself'."

"Y/N, I didn't know," Nick said.

You scoffed and let out a humourless laugh.

"Of course you didn't."

"I understand where you're coming from but look around. All these protests and marches and petitions and donations. The world is changing, its slowly getting better. Yes, racism is still out there and it's still very real but now there are people doing everything in their power to fight it. A change will come. I promise. "

"But I'm so scared," you cried.

"I know," he said. "So am I but it's going to be okay. I promise."
