Your eyes flew open as you leaned up on your elbows panting hard. Even though it was the beginning of June in Montana, you shouldn't be this hot in the middle of the night-early morning, or whatever time it was. There was a layer of sweat across your skin, making your shirt stick to you in a funny way. Well, Kayce's shirt that is...
Speaking of which, he was the problem. You had for some reason woken up from a very delicious dream where said cowboy had been between your legs and well, you were downright angry to not be back there. See, Kayce had been up at summer camp for the last two weeks with his father, brother, Rip, and the rest of the wranglers. You had to stay at the main house and help with a local community college's agricultural class tour. To make matters worse it was Kayce's ex-wife who had set the tour up and asked if that was, okay? Sure, back in March it was fine because you hadn't really thought about the fact you wouldn't see your boyfriend for two weeks because of it.
You fell back against your pillow and groan out of frustration. Glancing over you saw it was only a little before one in the morning. If Kayce had had a long day, there was a chance he could still be up? You reached for your phone and decided to text him, seeing as service was spotty on a good day up in the mountains.
Hey...you awake?
You blew out a puff of air as you settled back against your sheets, feeling a little less warm now that your temper calmed down. A few moments later your phone buzzed against your fingertips with Kayce's name and a picture of the two of you from last Christmas morning as your home screen. Smiling you slid your finger across the screen and brought your phone up to your ear.
"Hey," You whispered even though you were the only person in the main house. A thought you didn't really like to dwell on much, even though you knew there were two hands outside watching during this time.
"You okay?" Kayce's gruff voice filled your ears and warmed your whole body again.
"Y-Yea," You bit your lip. "I just...wanted to see how you were?"
Kayce didn't say anything for a few beats, and you almost thought you lost him before he spoke, "At one in the morning?"
"Forgive me for wanting to hear your voice," You rolled your eyes.
"No, no..." Kayce laughed. "I'm just joking."
"I know," You sighed.
"I miss you too, baby," His words made you involuntarily press your thighs together.
"How are you?" You asked.
"Lonely," Kayce chuckled deeply. "How are you?"
"In bed, wearing your shirt," You giggled towards the end. You were never that good at dirty talk no matter how much you tried. Kayce on the other hand could tell you about his favorite pizza in a way that made you want to rip his clothes off. You weren't sex-crazed, but damnit these last two weeks had been killer on you. Especially having to be around his ex-wife for some of those days. It was fine when Tate was wit her, but he was with Kayce.
"You're not being fair," Kayce groaned lowly.
"No..." You took a breath debating to bring this up. "But I haven't had a fair couple of weeks."
"What do you mean?" Kayce asked.
You leaned back up into a sitting position. Did he not remember?
"I've been with Monica the past two weeks and the students touring the ranch and learning the ways of the Dutton family...remember?"
"I..." Kayce cleared his throat. "I didn't know Monica was there."
"What?" You asked.
"I didn't know she would be there," Kayce sighed. "When she told us about it, I thought it would be another professor since she doesn't teach agriculture."
"Why am I not surprised?" You muttered but Kayce heard you.
"Are you okay?" This time he wasn't playing, he was concerned.
While you and Monica were cordial to one another, you wouldn't choose to be around her if you didn't have to. You weren't concerned about her wanting Kayce back or anything like that, but she would weaponize Tate at times against Kayce. She blamed Kayce's whole family for a lot of things they didn't do. Then there was you. Like most breakups you don't really want your ex to find someone after you whether you want them back or not, but Kayce found you before Monica found her current boyfriend. So, you weren't her favorite either. Plus, Tate thought you hung the moon...
"Today was the last day," You decided was a better answer.
"That wasn't my question."
Damnit, he always read right through you.
"It's done," You sighed. You didn't want to fight because no matter what Monica did, Kayce would always be a part of her life because of Tate. For him to have access to Tate, you needed to not drive a wedge between Monica and yourself because she'd only blame Kayce if you did.
"You could have told her to fuck off," He whispered.
"We both know how that would have ended..." You trailed off. "Plus, I like that we have Tate most of the summer due to her schedule with the school. I don't want to jeopardize that in any way for you."
"I'm sorry I'm not there," He offered you.
"Me too," You picked at his shirt. "When do you think you'll make a supply run back here next?"
"Probably in a few days," Kayce sighed. "Think you can hold on until then?"
"Will you bring Tate with you?" You asked.
"He's been asking about you too," Kayce laughed. "He's passed out next to me here in the tent."
"Has he had a good time?" You asked. "Did John take him fishing some? He told me how he wanted to work on his fly fishing and the river to the east is a perfect stop for that."
"I miss you," Kayce said quietly.
"I have an idea of what you can do when you see me," You said, trying to put the empty feeling inside you that came from when he said those words.
"What's that?"
"See, I had this dream earlier that I woke up from," You offered, grinning like the devil.
"What was the dream about?" Kayce asked. "Was I in it?"
"You were in fact," You laughed. "But it wasn't necessarily the fact that you were in it, but more so what you were doing in it."
"...what was I doing in it?" Kayce kept his voice low.
"Lots of things," You took a deep breath. "But it ended with your face between my legs."
Kayce was silent for a moment.
"If my son wasn't fucking right next to me..." He growled.
"I know," You giggled.
"Fuck, I can't go outside the tent either," Kayce groaned. "It's too cold and there's this wolf that keeps stalking us.
"Guess it's just me and my fingers tonight then," You sighed, knowing you had him exactly where you had been when you woke up.
"I could be there in two hours," Kayce murmured.
"No Kayce!" You laughed. "Don't go riding in the dark back here! You just said there was a wolf stalking you."
"Don't be telling me about your dreams then, woman!" Kayce laughed back at you. You both giggled for a bit before sleep started to creep into both your minds. While you didn't have anywhere you needed to be in the morning you knew Kayce had work to do.
"You need to get some sleep," You yawned. "I'll see you in a couple of days?"
"I'll see you tomorrow," Kayce confirmed.
"What? You said a couple of days for the supply run?" You were confused.
"That was before your dream."
