"Are you really not talking to me?" Kayce asked from where he was leaning against the doorframe to the bathroom.
You had just finished buttoning up your flannel shirt, running your hands through your hair one more time to be ready for the day. You were going to be spending some time with Beth while you both rode up to check on the progress to her and Rip's cabin.
Kayce and you had a pretty intense fight last night. It started out innocent, talking about your future and while you both couldn't picture your future without the other one in it...Kayce had been hell bent in trying to scare you away it seemed. He spoke of his family and what they must do to protect this ranch. How it isn't always ethical or moral and Kayce wasn't proud of some of the things he had done for his father. You had fought back, trying to explain that all you wanted was to be with him, except it never came out that way.
You were stubborn and while you respected Kayce, his family, and the Yellowstone, you also knew the limits of survival. You knew times were changing and while John Dutton seemed to dig his boots deeper and deeper into the dirt, the world around him was adapting to the new ways of the times. All of Kayce's excuses were from the past and you got irritate after a while and said if he didn't want you around, he should just say so, which cause him to snap back at you for picking fights to just prove you are right.
The problem with dating for a little over six years now is that you both knew how to hurt the other.
You brushed your hair over one of your shoulders and made to move around Kayce. He stood his ground, blocking your exit. You popped back on your hip and eyed him up and down, crossing your arms.
"Let's go," Beth's voice came out over Kayce's shoulders causing him to turn glance back at her.
"We're talking," He snapped.
"Doesn't look like a conversation to me," Beth challenged. You took this opportunity though to duck under Kayce's arm and walk over to the bed to put your boots on.
"Y/N," Kayce sighed coming over to stand next to you. When you reached for your other boot, he was faster and grabbed it from you.
"Are you a child?" You stood up, angry at this whole ordeal now.
"When you stop acting like one so will I," Kayce argued. While you were tall in nature, Kayce still had a good six inches on you, making you turn your head up to look him in the eyes.
"I don't have to do anything, Dutton!" You snapped, grabbing your boot, and shoving past Kayce to walk over to Beth. You hopped up and down a few times, pulling your boot on and straightening up.
You rarely called Kayce by his last name. Only when you were really irritated at him did you summon that, and it was mostly so he would listen to you.
"I'm leaving," Beth rolled her eyes and walked out.
"So am I," You started to follow her, but Kayce called out.
"You ain't going anywhere!"
You spun around so quickly your head hurt.
"That's not what you wanted last night!" You snapped and knew you had won this battle. Kayce frowned deeply at you, and you saw his shoulders sag from the weight of your words. You gave him one last look before turning on your heels and running after Beth.
Later that evening.
"You're gonna have to face him eventually," Beth giggled from her spot on the couch next to you. You both had eaten dinner with John and Rip before retiring to the living room for a whiskey. Kayce didn't join you all, telling his father by phone he'd be late at the office. You had heard his truck pull up and the door open and shut meaning he was on his way in.
