Request – The Reader has a huge fight with Monica and walks away from the family during dinner. Later, Kayce finds the Reader crying because no matter what Monica won't let Tate stay with just her. Kayce comforts her.

Sort of went a little off script here but I liked how it turned out!

"An apology?" You asked not sure if you heard her correctly.

"Yes," Monica nodded. "A big one."

"Monica, you don't owe me anything," You shook your head, not liking how those words sounded coming from her.

"One that's been a long time coming," Monica shifted her stance around and cleared her throat. "I've been pretty shitty towards you."

"Oh," You glanced around. "Well...I know you're protective...of Tate."

"I am, but that's not why I've acted the way I have towards you," Monica pressed her lips together to form a small line.

"Why have you then?" You asked, Kayce's words flooding your memory.

"I guess I just..." She trailed off. "I don't like Tate having another woman in his life like you."

"Like me?" You asked, trying to understand.

"Yeah," Monica spoke softly. "You make me question my own self as his mother sometimes and I hate it, if I'm being honest."

"Oh Monica," You sighed. "You shouldn't think that. Like I tried to say downstairs, I'm not looking to be his mother."

"I know that," Monica laughed. "Deep down I know that, but I still feel defensive. Especially when I hear about all the great things you do with Tate when he's here."

"You know I want to do those things," You shrugged. "I don't feel obligated, I just enjoy Tate. He's a good kid, and you should be proud of that because lets face it...we both know his father is not the greatest example when it comes to being reasonable and even-tempered."

"You're not helping this hating you thing," Monica giggled. "It's actually really hard to hate you."

"You're a great actress then," You rolled your eyes. "But thanks I guess?"

"Anyways, I'm sorry," Monica uncrossed her arms. "I'll try to lighten up some."

"I'm not your enemy," You offered her a small smile. "I think if you were to look closely, you'd see we were on the same side even."

"Maybe so," Monica made to turn around. "Well, we've overstayed our welcome but since it's so late we're going to take the guestroom downstairs. We'll be out in the morning since I have an early class. Have a nice evening and I'm sorry again."

"Thanks," You watched her go and went back inside your bedroom. You heard the shower going and went to find Kayce finishing up his shower. Hopping on the sink counter you waited until he turned off the water and grabbed a towel, stepping out while wrapping it around his waist.

"You're alive," He smirked.

"Did you know she was going to do that?" You raised an eyebrow at him. "Did you tell her to?"

"I didn't tell her to do shit," Kayce rolled his eyes, walking over to you. "But I knew when she didn't leave that there was a possibility, she might come try to talk to you."

"She apologized," You said quietly.

"Really?" Kayce looked surprised. "Wow...how did that make you feel?"

"Weird?" You shrugged.

"Weird?" Kayce tilted his head to the side.

"I don't know, there's a lot of work that needs to happen there but maybe it was a good start? She and Tate are staying here for the night since it's so late and leaving early."
