Request - You were a wranglers sister, and you showed up at the ranch because you were in trouble (either an abusive relationship or money troubles), and so John hires you because you can groom the horses and you fall for either Kayce or Lee (if he were to live).
Author's Note - Obvi I'm doing KAyce and I made a little tweak to it :)
"Think you can keep up with us tomorrow?" Ryan asked you from over on his horse.
You eyed him from atop your horse before rolling your eyes and putting your sunglasses on. You had been employed at The Yellowstone for three days now. Thankfully, John Dutton saw something in you that no one else had seen. After running away from your abusive ex-boyfriend, you tracked your older brother, Ryan, down and because you were good with horses, John decided to give you a second chance.
You were grateful for him, as you followed the other wranglers and Rip back towards the barn for the evening. You noticed a guy standing off next to John as the group rode in. He didn't look too much older than you, his dirty blonde hair hanging under his cowboy hat.
"Who's that with Mr. Dutton?" You asked Ryan who glanced over to where you were pointing.
"That's Kayce, his youngest,' Ryan said.
You slide off your horse and started to walk towards the barn when John called your name out and waved you over to where he was standing with Kayce. You glanced at Ryan who shrugged but took your reigns from you. When you got close to John, you pulled your sunglasses off and offered him a warm smile.
"Yes, sir?" Your eyes glanced at Kayce who was watching you.
"This is my son, Kayce," John tapped Kayce's arm. The guy nodded at you. "He's got a knack for horses just like you and he's brought two new ones for the ranch."
"Okay?" You didn't know where this was going.
"I want you two to break them for me," John cleared his throat. "We need them done sooner rather than later and with the two of you it can happen sooner. You good with that?"
"Yes, sir," You nodded.
"Good," John looked at Kayce. "Show her her new buddies for the week."
With that, John took off back up the road towards the main house. You watched him for a beat before turning your attention back to Kayce. He was eyeing you, with a boyish smile on his face. You had heard rumblings of the youngest Dutton and his affair with a Native girl back in the day. He had a son, but no longer a wife now. Staring at him you weren't quite sure why any women would leave.
"You wanna at least see the horse before we lose sunlight?" Kayce asked you, knocking some sense back into you.
"What?" You shook your head.
"Or you just wanna stare at me?" Kayce smirked at you.
"I wasn't staring at you," You rolled your eyes. "Don't flatter yourself."
"You seem to be doing a good enough job of that," Kayce bit his lip as he walked over to one of the corrals. You saw two horses grazing, no brand yet. They looked wild, and beautiful, but you also knew that meant deadly. Your back already hurt just by looking at them with what was to come.
"How long have you worked with horses?" Kayce asked you.
"A few years," You answered, looking up at him. "You?"
"My whole life," Kayce shrugged. "So... Y/N? Where are you from?"
"East," You answered. "I followed my brother out here."
"Brother?" Kayce looked curious at you.
"Ryan," You nodded behind you to the barn where you knew Ryan was. "He's my brother."
"Oh," Kayce nodded. "I saw y'all ride out together earlier today and thought...never mind."
"That we were together?" You smirked at him. "I know we're both pretty, but no. He's not my type."
"What's your type?" Kayce asked you.
"Cowboys," You answered honestly. "Usually asshole ones that beat the shit out of me."
"That...took a turn," Kayce frowned. "Is that why you're here?"
"More or less," You shrugged. "But he's gone and I'm here trying to fit into a place that's hard to find grace."
"I can agree with that," Kayce mumbled. "This place is different."
"Why are you here?" You asked. "Thought you had a life outside this place?"
"Not anymore," Kayce shook his head. "Guess there was something calling me back here."
Next Day
"Fuck!" Kayce groaned as he was once again thrown on his back.
"God damnit!" You cried as you slowly stood up from the dirt.
"Careful!" Kayce called as you were once again thrown.
"Can one of us stay on for more than two seconds?" You sighed, seeing Kayce tumble off the horse again.
After three hours of work, you both decided to take a break and found refuge under a tree in the shade. Due to it not being a large tree, you were both sitting close to one another.
"Have you ever thought about the fact of what horses could do if they had to break us?" You asked Kayce.
"I think they do break us," Kayce sighed. "I think while we try to tame them, they remind us it's okay to be a little wild."
You looked over at Kayce, the guy had grown on your tremendously the past few hours. He was kind, strong, and smart. You could tell he cared about his craft and was really good at it too.
"I think they're tired of us today," You looked at the horses.
"We could take them to the river tomorrow and see how they do chest high," Kayce offered.
"That always makes me nervous," You frowned. "Like they'll buck you off and you'll be crushed under the water or something."
"You can't be scared of them," Kayce shook his head.
"I ain't scared of them," You rolled your eyes. "I'm being practical about them and their strength."
"I bet I can break them in the water," Kayce smirked at you.
"Alright," You tilted your head. "What's the bet?"
"If I can't break them..." Kayce thought for a moment. "I'll cook you dinner up at the main house one night."
"And if you can break them?" You raised an eyebrow.
"Then we have dessert at the foreman's cabin." Kayce licked his lips. "Just us."
"Sounds like I get something either way," You giggled.
"You do," Kayce stood up and offered you his hand. When he pulled you to your feet he tugged you close to him and leaned down to your ear. "But you're the dessert in mine."
He left you flustered as he made his way back to the horses.
