Request – Mad reader walks away from Kayce, while he was showing her how to head and heel a cow because the reader's ex-boyfriend shows up, but Kayce lassos her back to him for a make out.

You felt another giggle leave your lips as you watched Jimmy get drug by one of the cows across the dirt. You were seated on top of the fence, watching the wranglers practice for the incoming cows that would arrive in a few days for the springtime. You'd never admit it out loud, but you never thought Kayce Dutton was hotter than when he was being a cowboy. And right now, he was dirty from the dust kicked up, making you want to lick him from head to toe...see? You needed to be stopped.

"God damnit, Jimmy," Rip barked from over near you. "Keep your two feet on the fucking ground for once."

"S-Sorry!" Jimmy called, standing up and trying to dust his jeans off. You saw two trucks pull up off to the side and figured it must be a few of the neighbor ranchers crews to help. You focused your eyes back on your favorite one.

Kayce was showing Carter how to tie off the rope and you caught yourself smiling again as he was so serious about it. A deep voice saying your name made you turn back to the side though and you felt your stomach drop.

"I thought that was you," said your ex-boyfriend, Derrick. Your body acting faster than your words and you hopped off the fence and made your way forward through the wranglers practicing. You knew Rip had caught your exit and would step in when Derrick called your name out again. The problem this time was that Kayce heard him yell your name, as did the rest of the crew nearby.

It hadn't been a good break-up. Derrick didn't love anything more than whiskey and when you finally got the nerve to leave his ass, he had chunked an empty bottle at your head. Had he been sober he may have hit you, but that was your final straw and you hadn't seen him since that night. You didn't like that he was here either, but he must have found work with one of the ranchers on this side of the state.

You made your way closer to Kayce to told Carter to go let Lloyd teach him some things. Carter gave you a curious look as you passed each other. Kayce's eyes found yours and you knew an explanation was needed, but you certainly didn't want to give any.

"Hi," You said, sticking your hands into your back pockets of your jeans.

"Hi?" Kayce chuckled. "You okay?"

"Yeah, why?" You asked, offering him a tight smile.

"Who's that?" Kayce nodded behind you.

"Will you show me how to do that?" You ignored his question and pointed to the rope in his hand.

"What?"

"Teach me how to do it," You stepped over next to Kayce and looked at the wooden legs set up to act as a cow's hind legs for practice. "Let me be a cowboy."

"Don't think I want you to be a cowboy," Kayce said, and you knew he was looking back at Derrick again. "You not going to tell me who your friend is?"

"No friend of mine," You shook your head. "So you want it on both legs or just one?"

"Just one," Kayce wasn't budging though. You reached for his rope, but he held it behind him, away from your reach. "Who is he?"

"No one, Kayce," You mumbled, looking up into his eyes. You tried to hide the butterflies in your stomach as his caramel eyes danced with yours for a moment.

"Doesn't seem like no one," Kayce responded.

You pouted and gave a small sigh. "He's my ex...and it wasn't a good breakup."

"What did he do?" Kayce's who demeanor changed.

"Nothing."

"Stop lying to me," Kayce snapped.

"I'm not," You matched his tone. "He was just a stupid guy and it's over now so there's no reason to bring it up."

"Except he's now on my property," Kayce argued.

"Don't be a guy about this," You rolled your eyes. Sure, Derrick didn't deserve you, but he was also a stupid drunk who probably needed the money. Plus it had been well over a year now since that night.

"So, you don't want me defending you now?" Kayce rolled his eyes.

"You're not defending," You shook your head. "You're talking about property."

"I'll defend what's mine. So?"

"So," You took a breath. "He's not worth it."

"Y/N, you sure are looking good!" Derrick called out from where he was standing with the others who had arrived at the fence. You didn't have anytime to respond before Kayce snapped back.

"Hey," Kayce's scowl was one to fear. "How about you do your fucking job I'm paying you for?"

Derrick's frown deepened, as did yours.

"Sorry, didn't know she was yours."

"And if she is?" Kayce took a step in Derrick's direction.

Rip stepped over in front of Derrick, blocking your view of him, and started to bark orders at the new men. You looked back over at Kayce who was fuming but not saying anything. Finally, he glanced back over at you.

"You okay, caveman?" You raised an eyebrow.

"Huh?" Kayce grunted. You rolled your eyes and started to walk away from him. You didn't want this, you certainly didn't want them acting like stupid boys.

You got about three steps before you felt rope fall against your shoulders, stopping only because your arms bent at your elbows, and the nit tighten against you. Looking down you saw that Kayce's rope was now around your middle and you looked behind you at him.

"Are you serious?" You asked him. "Kayce!"

Kayce didn't respond but pulled hard on the rope, bringing you forcefully back and falling almost into his chest. Your hands pressed against his sides you felt one of his cup your cheek...his lips finding yours and silencing any more of your complaints.

While everyone on the ranch knew you and Kayce were together, public displays of affection weren't something the two of you did often and certainly not to this degree. Kayce was kissing you like he had just come back from war. His lips were warm against yours as his fingers carded through your tangled hair behind your neck. You couldn't stop the light moan escaping your lips as his tongue slipped past to dance with yours.

If he hadn't been holding you up, your knees would have given out by now as Kayce tilted his head, deepening the kiss. As you neared the spot where you would completely succumb to him, Kayce's lips left yours and a soft whine came from the back of your throat.

When you opened your eyes, Kayce was smirking down at you, but had yet to release you.

"What was that?" You asked, your legs a bit wobbly still.

"Oh, y'know..." Kayce's eyes glanced over your shoulder briefly. "Just making sure they know what's mine."

"Oh my god," You laughed, pressing against his chest but due to the rope you didn't get far. "Let me go!"

"See, I can't do that," Kayce chuckled, reaching down, and threading the rope between your legs and then around your left you. "You asked for me to teach you."

"On the stupid cow!" You wiggled in his grip, but you were no match for him. "Don't you dare, Kayce Dutton!"

Kayce didn't listen to you though, and soon you were thrown over his shoulder, your knees bent against his arms as he spun you around to walk over towards the gate.

"Rip, will you?" Kayce nodded towards the gate and Rip laughed, opening the fence for you and Kayce.

"Have a nice evening, Y/N" Rip tipped his hat to you once he was in your line of sight.

"I'll remember this, Rip," You growled but couldn't stop your smile. Your eyes caught Derrick for a split second and his sour expression made your heart flutter ever so slightly. He was seeing you happy and it was a nice feeling for once.

Kayce's hand smacking your rear end brought you back to the moment though.

"Put me down, Dutton!" You yelled.

"Ain't happening, woman!" Kayce laughed as he made he was back to the house with you giggling on his shoulder the whole way.
