Request – Part Two of "You're not sick, Mrs. Dutton" the Pregnancy
"Babe, we gotta leave in about fifteen!" Kayce called from downstairs.
You knew you were frustrating him, but you had been exhausted during your first trimester being pregnant. You could probably be thankful you weren't sick or anything like that, but the exhaustion was almost like being sick. By seven every night, you were crawling into bed...and that was usually with a nap around three in the afternoon. Your doctor said it was common and would go away during your second trimester. But tonight, you had to power through.
Kayce, as Livestock Commissioner, had to attend the governor's gala benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Montana. You were currently putting on your strappy, black heels...sitting on the bed in your underwear. Your black gown is placed on the bed next to you. Standing up you picked up the high neck-line gown, pulling it over your head.
"Almost done!" You called out as the fabric flowed down to your ankles.
You brushed the fabric down your hips as you walked over to the mirror and your dresser where your jewelry was. You hooked your earrings in and clasped the necklace Kayce had given you for your birthday last year around your neck. You walked over to the floor-length mirror and paused.
You turned to the left and looked at your reflection...and then to the right. Surely not, you thought as you looked at your stomach. There was a little pouch now, right between where your hips bones were. You reached down and cupped the tiny pouch, amazed that you were showing. Not that you didn't know it was coming, but you hadn't expected it tonight of all nights.
You and Kayce hadn't told anyone outside of your immediate family that you were pregnant. With his job and the way this family operated, you wanted to keep this joy between the two of you for as long as you could. But now...there was no way someone wouldn't see this and think you weren't pregnant.
"Kayce!" You called out.
A few moments later Kayce walked in, dressed in a dark suit jacket and black jeans. He saw you standing in front of the mirror, holding yourself.
"What's wrong?" He asked walking up behind you.
"Look," You nodded to the mirror, moving your hands to show off the tiny bump.
You watched Kayce's eyes look at your bump, his hand coming up from behind you and covering your own hands. His chin rested against your shoulder as you both made eye contact in the mirror.
"Your beautiful," Kayce whispered to you and you felt a shiver run down your back.
Almost five years of marriage and he could still do that to you.
"No one knows," You whispered, explaining to him why you were nervous.
"They'd find out eventually," Kayce shrugged.
"I just don't want to make you uncomfortable," You turned your head and kissed the side of Kayce's temple.
Kayce had seemed to do very well with this pregnancy so far, but you worried that it was because it technically was a secret for now. He had been attentive to you, whatever you needed. He would support you when you couldn't make something because you didn't feel well or were exhausted. But you also knew how protective Kayce could be.
You loved your husband, but he had a temper like a bucking bronco.
"M'not worried," Kayce's hands rubbed along your bump.
"You sure?" You asked.
Kayce turned you around to face him, his hand wrapping around your back now as he pulled you into his chest. Your hands ran up his jacket to his shoulders, flicking off a piece of fuzz on one of them.
"That's my child inside you," Kayce said, his voice low. "You think I wouldn't want everyone to know that?"
"I-I don't know..." You stuttered. "Sorry, blame it on the hormones sometimes I overthink things."
"You did that before I got you pregnant," Kayce chuckled.
"Don't be cute," You raised an eyebrow at him.
You pushed away from him but Kayce just laughed and pulled you closer to him. Your arms wrapped around his shoulders now.
"You won't be able to hold me like this for long," You whispered, your lips brushing against his. "Pretty soon I'll be too big."
"I'll hold you then too," Kayce smiled, taking a breath. "Do we have to go tonight?"
"Hmmm," You pressed your lips against his softly. "M'afriad so."
"How are you feeling?" Kayce asked.
"Exhausted," You sighed. "But also hungry...and right now I'm choosing to focus on that."
"Alright, baby," Kayce chuckled, kissing your lips quickly one last time before he pulled away from you.
You both made your way downstairs to find John waiting for you both at the front door. He was dressed similarly to Kayce, but also had his cowboy hat on. You watched his eyes fall on your bump and knew that you needed to prepare for a lot of that tonight.
"You look beautiful, Y/N," John smiled at you.
"Thank you," You looked at him. "I know it's obvious now."
"The beauty of life," John held the door open for you and Kayce.
Once inside Kayce's truck, you fidgeted with your dress again, the hunger inside you growing. You pulled the mirror down to take another look at your makeup.
"You look perfect," Kayce mumbled from the driver's seat.
"I'm starving," You confessed.
Almost like magic, a bag of crackers came from the backseat where John was sitting. You looked shocked, taking the bag and looking back there.
"Bless you," You sighed, pulling a cracker out to snack on.
You saw Kayce glance back at his father in the mirror. John caught his son's eye and chuckled.
"I did this four times, son," John smiled. "You'll learn soon enough."
