Request - Reader thinks she's alone and she plays music, Nose on the Grindstone by Tyler Childers, and Kayce tells her she has a beautiful voice or something like that.

It was rare that you were ever completely alone.

If Kayce wasn't with you, one of his family members were, if a Dutton wasn't with you one of the wranglers were, and so on. For a state which had more cattle than humans, it was always amazing to you just how little of times you found yourself completely alone.

But today you had woken up with a slight fever. You didn't want to be contagious to anyone, so you stayed put up at the main house while Kayce left for work like normal. John was in Helena. Rip was leading the wranglers with whatever work was needed today and Beth was in town doing God-knows what.

You had slept most of the morning and by now it was after one. You felt much better, not sick at all and wondered if it had just been your body saying you needed to take a break and rest. You had the tendency to run yourself dry these days and it probably had caught up with you.

You made your way down to the kitchen after changing into some jeans and one of Kayce's long-sleeved shirts. It smelled like him, and you instantly wished he was with you. But chasing bad guys across the state had become his new pastime and who were you to get in between a cowboy and his robbers?

After opening the two big windows in the kitchen you breathed in the fresh, crisp air. Your lungs opened and you felt even better than you had after you woke up. You would fight anyone who told you this couldn't help cure a sickness. You were able to find everything needed to make a sandwich and laid it all out in front of you. But there was something missing.

Snapping your fingers when you thought of it, you reached for your phone in your back pocket. After syncing it up to the speakers by the door you turned to your last played artist and soon Nose on the Grindstone by Tyler Childers started to seep through the air around you.

You began to make your sandwich and hummed for a minute before you let your own voice join in.

Live the best that you can and don't lie and don't steal

Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills

Your hips dipped in time with the beat as you closed your sandwich up before cutting it in half. Your voice continued.

Well Daddy, I've been tryin', I just can't catch a break

There's too much in this world I can't seem to shake

But I remember your words – Kayce!

You had turned around to grab the pickle jar and saw Kayce leaning against the door leading to the back porch. He has a small smile on his face, arms crossed, and was relaxed.

"How ya doing?" Kayce chuckled.

You reached for your phone and pressed paused, incasing you both in silence for a moment before you giggled. "I didn't hear the door...sorry."

"Don't be," Kayce pushed off from where he was leaning and walked over to you. "You feeling any better?"

"I am," You nodded. "Must have just been my body telling me to slow down."

Kayce hummed and then looked at your sandwich briefly before focusing back on your face. He looked a little tired, but for once he was home early...almost too early.

"You're home early," You decided to point out.

"Wanted to make sure you were okay," Kayce wrapped his arms around your waist, causing you to lean into him. Not that you were complaining. "You have a pretty singing voice."

"Shut up," You rolled your eyes but wrapped your arms around his neck.

"You do," Kayce leaned down and kissed you slowly.

The kiss ended, but you kept your lips brushing his. "You want half of my sandwich?"

"Yes, please," Kayce pressed another kiss to your lips before leaning back and grabbing one half, making you laugh out loud. He took a large bite, smiling at you.

You pressed your phone again, the music starting back up as you hopped up on the counter, grabbing the other half of the sandwich and taking a smaller bite than Kayce had.
