Request – Hey can I request a rainbow baby story like the female mc lost her first kid during the time that Beth got kidnapped and she gets her second chance of having her baby later on. If you can do this is would be great thanks
"Hey there, Mrs. Dutton," Your doctor, Dr. Robbins, walked into the exam room. "How are we doing today?"
"Good," You nodded.
"No Kayce this time?" Dr. Robbins asked you as she looked at your file.
"His job took him almost up to the border this afternoon," You sighed, the reminder making you just as nervous as Kayce kissing you goodbye this morning did.
"Well, this is just a check-in so he's not missing much," Dr. Robbins smiled at you. "How are you feeling now that you're in the last home stretch?"
"Large," You answered honestly.
"Yes, that seems to happen around this time," Dr. Robbins laughed. "You've been a pretty small size though for most of this pregnancy so I'm glad to see you put on a little weight since last time."
"You said I needed to," You sighed.
Your weight had been a concern early on. Usually, women have no problem gaining weight, and they should gain weight, but you were almost losing two pounds for every pound you would gain naturally. Dr. Robbins had worked with your diet and for the last four weeks, you have been able to gain about eight pounds.
"How has Kayce been with the diet?" Dr. Robbin's raised an eyebrow at you.
"He says he's pretty tired of salmon and avocados," You smiled. "I don't blame him really."
"You're almost done," Dr. Robbins wrote a few things down on your file. "How's your mental health doing?"
"Um..." You cleared your throat. "I have good days and not-so-good ones."
"Y/N...we've talked about this," Dr. Robbins looked up at you. "You are so much healthier and prepared this time around. Your first pregnancy was a rough one where everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Plus, you went through an enormous amount of stress for one person. That has not happened this around, you need to remember that."
How were you supposed to tell her what living as a Dutton was like? Stress was almost your middle name with having your husband as Livestock Commissioner for the whole damn state. Or people coming after your family members in ways like kidnapping? But you just nodded your head.
"It's normal to feel worried," Dr. Robbins continued. "How have your conversations with Kayce been?"
"We talk," You nodded.
"Hopefully more than just talk," Dr. Robbins' eyes widened.
"We do..." You cleared your throat. "Kayce's job is very stressful, and I try to make our time at home as calm as I can. But I tell him how I'm doing and if I need something from him."
"But you still let him know when you need more, right?" Dr. Robbins asked. "You at least let him know your worries and anxiety around this pregnancy due to your history?"
"We've had those conversations," You said. "He was there the first time; he remembers what happened to me."
"And what does he say?" Dr. Robbins asked. "How does he feel?"
"How does he feel?" You asked.
"Yes..." Dr. Robbins nodded. "Have you asked him how he's doing?"
"Like I said, his job is stressful but Kayce is good at it," You started.
"No, Y/N," Dr. Robbins cut you off. "Have you asked Kayce how he feels about doing this process again with you? Have you asked him if he's anxious or worried?"
"I uh," You thought back. "Shit."
Later that evening
"Hey baby," Kayce walked in, putting his hat and jacket on the knobs by the door.
"Hey, cowboy," You smiled at him from where you were working on your stew for dinner in the kitchen.
"Smells good," Kayce walked up to you and kissed your cheek, his arms wrapping around your stomach. "How was your appointment?"
Of course, he remembered.
"Everything is right on schedule," You smiled at him. "I gained eight pounds since a month ago, so Dr. Robbins was pleased with that. She'd like me to gain about four more to feel comfortable for delivery."
"Hence the stew I'm assuming," Kayce smirked.
"Don't act like you're mad," You pushed back against him.
"Just glad it ain't fucking salmon again," Kayce mumbled.
"It's got good fat that I needed!" You laughed.
"So does steak!" Kayce argued.
"Hey," You placed the lid partially on the pot and turned around in his arms." Dr. Robbins did bring up something with me today that I don't think I've been a very good wife to you about."
"Okay?" Kayce raised an eyebrow. "What's that?"
"She checks in on my mental health," You started. "With losing our first baby...it's just something she feels important about. Today she asked me if we've talked about things and I told her have."
"We have," Kace nodded, his hands rubbing your hips.
"But then she asked me if I've asked how you feel about having this baby after losing our first," You reached up and placed your hands on his chest. "And I realized I don't think I've ever asked if you were okay."
"If I was okay?" Kayce asked. "You mean if I want this baby?"
"No, I mean..." You fisted his work shirt. "I mean if you're worried about this baby...if you feel anxious or even scared?"
Kayce looked at you for a moment and you could see his mind spinning around as he took in your words and thought about his answer.
"I worry about you," Kayce sighed. "I always worry about you...how you're feeling...what's going on in your head...if I'm doing enough for you...that's what I worry about."
"Are you scared?" You whispered.
"Maybe a little," Kayce nodded. "But I...I know that this time it's supposed to work."
"You know that?" You tilted your head.
"Yeah," Kayce said. "I don't know how, but I just do."
You nodded your head.
"Three more weeks and our whole lives will change," You said.
"Scared?" Kayce asked with a smile, pulling you as close as he could.
"Not as much after hearing you say you know it'll work," You smiled.
"It'll all work out," Kayce pressed his lips to yours.
"Thank you," You smiled up at him.
