Request idea: what if Y/N overhears Kayce on the phone asking her dad for permission to propose? Like she overhears him being kind of nervous and his speech?
You knew it was early, even though the sun was breaking through the blinds, hitting you in the eyes. You stretched out, rolling over with the intent to snuggle with your boyfriend. You reached out but were only met with empty sheets.
You opened your eyes and looked around the bedroom. You leaned up on your elbows and listened to see if you heard the shower on...but nothing. Where was Kayce?
It was Saturday, and you knew there were tasks to get done, but you also knew it was normal for you and Kayce to stay in bed a little longer than normal because it was the only day you really could. You sat up and stretched your arms above you head before you got out of bed.
You grabbed Kayce's sweatshirt as you walked by the dresser and tugged it on. Even though it was June, the mornings could still be cool up in the mountains. Your feet padded into the bathroom, and you brushed your hair and teeth, splashing water on your face to help wake you up more.
You made your way out of the bedroom and quietly walked down the stairs. John was probably already up and out riding somewhere...maybe Kayce had gone with him? That wasn't abnormal now, and you were determined for those two to last at least one summer where they didn't point a gun at the other in some way.
You walked into the kitchen and saw someone had already made coffee for everyone. You poured yourself a cup and let the warm liquid heat up your fingers as you walked into the living room. It was your last option to see if Kayce was in fact somewhere in the house.
No Kayce in sight though. You were almost going to go back upstairs and call him when you noticed the back door was open with the screen door still shut.
Bingo, you thought and walked over to it.
You were about to open it when you heard Kayce's voice. He was quiet, more so than usual and he was using a hushed voice which was unlike him. You leaned to the side and saw him sitting with his back to the door, his phone up to his ear.
You knew it was wrong to eavesdrop, but then you heard your name.
"No, sir," Kayce said. "I don't think Y/N has any idea."
What was he talking about? What didn't you know?
"Well, I-I just thought it was appropriate," Kayce continued. "Seeing as how Y/N is a little old fashion in some ways...that I come to you first."
Old fashion? Who was he talking to?
"Well, sir," Kayce fidgeted in his seat, and you would have found it adorable had you not been curious. "You know I love your daughter."
Daughter? Was Kayce talking to your dad?
"I love her more..." Kayce took a breath. "Sir, I love her more than my lungs need air. She's...she's everything to me, sir."
You gripped the cup in your hand tightly. While you and Kayce had no problems showing each other how much you loved one another, you were very private in your relationship. So, hearing him tell your father how he felt about you was heartwarming to say the least.
"I-I think it's time," Kayce continued. "We've been together for about four years now...and she's made me happier than I've ever been...and I just don't see a life without her in it, with me."
You held your breath as realization started to sink into what Kayce was talking about. Everything started to add up to you.
"Sir..." Kayce cleared his throat. "I would like to ask permission to marry your daughter."
You felt as if time stood still as you waited. You had already said yes to Kayce in your heart years ago, but to hear those words come out of his mouth to your father was a validation you hadn't realized your heart needed.
"Thank you, sir," Kayce seemed to physically relax. "Thank you...yes, sir I know...she's amazing...I do, sir...I love her...all of her...Thank you...take care."
Kayce hung up and phone and you watched him sink back into his chair.
You wanted to cry or scream or shout...but you also knew the importance of having Kayce make this decision. Kayce was always particular with his life choices, especially if it came to you or his son, Tate. He was protective of you and your relationship. He wouldn't do anything unless he was one hundred percent sure about it.
So, you counted to twenty before you walked backwards a few steps.
"Babe?" You called out as if to show you were looking for him.
You then walked to the screen door and pushed it open, stepping out on the deck and acted like you were about to call him again when you spotted him.
"Hey," You smiled at him.
"Sorry," Kayce looked over at you.
If you hadn't heard what you just did, you'd have thought he seemed a little to awake this early in the morning, but you pretended not to notice.
"Missed you in bed," You walked over to him.
"Had to take a call," Kayce held open his arm as you sat down next to him, throwing your legs over his lap. "Didn't want to wake you."
"S'alright," You nuzzled into his neck as he wrapped his arms around you. "Everything okay?"
"Everything's fine," Kayce reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
Your eyes danced across his face. He was gonna ask you to marry him. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but some day soon. You were going to become a Dutton. But most importantly, you were going to be married to Kayce...everything good and annoying that came with that. You would be his forever.
"Why you staring?" Kayce chuckled and you realized you had been staring at him.
"I just love you," You shrugged, taking a sip of your coffee. "That a crime?"
"This badge say I could make it one," Kayce smirked.
"You wouldn't dare arrest me," You giggled.
"Why's that?" Kayce tilted his head, his hand running up and down your thigh.
"Cause I'd take you down with me," You shrugged. "You and me, forever bud."
"Forever, huh?" Kayce murmured softly.
"I wouldn't mind that," You smiled up at him.
Kayce hummed at you as you snuggled down into his embrace. The two of you watching the sun rise higher in the sky until it was time to go to work.
