Part Two
Thirty minutes into this coffee date, you knew quite a bit about this Kayce Dutton.
He lived at the Yellowstone Ranch, his family's place, and had one son from a previous marriage named Tate. He had also served in the military, you noted he wasn't too fond of saying that part about himself, but mostly has lived here. He also had a cordial relationship with his ex-wife, who was a teacher on the reservation.
"Okay, so you know a little about me," Kayce took a sip of his coffee. "Now tell me a little about you."
"Well," You leaned back in your booth, you were both tucked into a corner away from the cold windows and doors. Kayce knew the owner who set y'all up while he went back upstairs to his apartment over the diner. "I'm from Utah."
"I said something I don't know," Kayce smirked at you.
"I was getting there," You rolled your eyes. "I'm from Utah but I was born in Oregon. After my mom dies when I was seven, my dad moved my brother and I to Utah. I was there until a few months ago when I decided I needed something new, a different view."
"Your mom died?" Kayce asked.
"Yeah," You nodded. "A car accident one night...she had been drinking too much again."
It was a sore subject to you. Both of your parents drank too much, your mom just was dumb enough to get behind her wheel one night instead of calling your dad. Your younger brother was only five...it was hard on all of you. You hadn't seen your father drink since that night though.
"M'sorry," Kayce frowned. "My mother died when I was around that age too. We were all out riding and her horse got spooked and fell on her."
"Oh God," You gasped. "Kayce I'm so sorry."
"Yeah," He nodded. "But look at us now, huh? Why did you leave Utah?"
"I wanted a new view," You answered again.
"Doesn't Utah have mountains and rivers too?" He smirked and finished his coffee.
You sighed heavily and looked over at him. "So maybe I wanted a different, personal, view."
"Ex-husband?" Kayce asked.
"Ex-boyfriend," You clarified. "Total trash actually...just took me a little longer than most to see his ways."
"Drunk?"
"His charmingest quality probably," You frowned.
"What made you finally say enough?" Kayce was interested, you could tell.
"Um," You felt slightly uncomfortable. Not by Kayce, but by how this next part always sounded in your head. "I guess when he threw a whiskey glass at me one night and it cut my cheek."
"Y/N," Kayce's eyes were wide. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," You nodded, trying to seem like it didn't phase you. "He was a drunk and I was stupid to stay with them as long as I did."
"We all do stupid things sometimes when it comes to relationships," Kayce sighed. "But, I don't think you were stupid."
"I don't think you threw a glass at your ex-wife, did you?" You raised an eyebrow in a challenge.
"No," Kayce shook his head, leaning on his forearms. "But I stayed in a loveless marriage because I wanted my son to see what a proper marriage is. Turned out backfiring and he now went through a nasty divorce...how nice is that?"
"Kids are tough," You shrugged. "I'm sure your son has handled it as best he can. Maybe you've even taught him a good life lesson that nothing is perfect?"
"No kids for you?" Kayce asked.
"No," You softly smiled. "Maybe one day."
You saw Kayce glance behind you, out one of the windows and sigh.
"I need to get you back," Kayce smiled. "Even though I've enjoyed talking to you."
"I bet you have things at the ranch that need to be done too," You finished your coffee. "But thank you for the date."
"Thanks for agreeing," Kayce and you both stood up and put your jackets on. Kayce hollered up to the owner saying you were leaving. You felt his hand on the small of your back as you walked out of the diner and back to his truck.
"We still need to get you your tanks when we get back," You remembered.
"I don't need the tanks," Kayce chuckled.
"What?" You looked over at him.
"I just needed a reason to talk to you," He shrugged, acting like it wasn't a big deal but you could see his cheek tint pink.
"That's an expensive reason to talk to me," You laughed. "I can get you your money back."
"I'll pick up the tanks when we need them again," Kayce shrugged. "Now where do you live?"
"My cars at the store," You pointed.
"Yeah, but I don't want you driving in this," Kayce reasoned. "So, I'll drop you home and I can bring you back to your car once this passes tomorrow."
You told Kayce where you were and a few minutes later you were pulling up to your small cabin tucked away behind some trees down one of the roads. It was green and you loved the blue door and windows, with a small porch.
The snow was so thick now you couldn't see the pathway up to the door though. You looked over at Kayce who was looking towards the sky with a nervous look on his face.
"Can you make it back to the ranch?" You asked softly.
"Sure," Kayce changed his look. "Don't worry about me."
"You could come inside?" You offered. "Wait it out some?"
"You don't mind?" Kayce asked, testing the waters. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable."
"I can make us some dinner and I bet the snow stops soon," You opened your door. "I remember them saying it'll stop around eight tonight."
"I'm not going to turn down a meal," Kayce smiled and turned off his truck.
