Two little pink lines were all you needed to confirm your suspicion. You looked at the white stick in your hands and felt your stomach drop.
You were pregnant.
Sitting down on the bathroom tile floor you put your head in your hands. How could you have been so stupid?
It had been three weeks ago. You were out at a bar when the Yellowstone Ranch guys all came into the bar. Your eyes had found Kayce Dutton, your old childhood friend, and he was instantly by your side.
You hadn't seen him in a few years. When you were younger, he got some girl on the reservation pregnant and tried to make it work. He enlisted in the military, and you hadn't seen him in about five years since then.
Growing up, you were best friends with Kayce Dutton. When you turned fourteen, you fell in love with Kayce Dutton and that night...well...
You thought back to that night and it made your cheeks blush.
His divorce from Monica was almost finalized. In fact, you glanced at the date, yesterday would have been when they signed the papers. But three weeks ago, when you let Kayce Dutton come home with you and into your bed...he was not divorced.
You had to react quickly and throw yourself face-first into your toilet before you threw up. After flushing you leaned your head on the cool porcelain and tried to catch your breath. A few minutes later and you lifted your head.
You had to tell him.
***
You pulled up to the Dutton ranch and got out of your car. It was a warm, spring morning as you made your way up the stairs, stopping when you heard your name being called. Turning you saw Kayce walking up from the barn.
"What're you doing here?" Kayce smiled. "Not that I'm complaining."
"Hey," You smiled. "I-uh...just wanted to see if I could talk to you."
"What's up?" Kayce had reached you and wrapped his arms around your body for a hug.
He was warm and smelled good and you caught yourself forgetting why you were there for a split second. You pulled back, looking up into his golden eyes.
"Um..." You felt nervous and had to push down the thought of throwing up again.
"You okay?" Kayce asked, his eyes turning to ones of concern. "You're looking a little pale."
"Kayce..." You sighed, your hands holding onto his arms. "Look...a few weeks ago...when we..."
"Yeah?" Kayce nodded. "You don't regret it now, do you?"
"What?" You asked surprised. "No."
"No?" Kayce's lip quirked at the corner.
"No...Kayce," You shook your head. "I-I'm-"
"Because I didn't," Kayce interrupted. "Regret it that is."
"You...didn't?" You asked him.
Kayce's hands held your hips tighter.
"Not for a second," Kayce smiled at you. "Been thinking about it every night since."
You took a deep breath, trying to remind yourself of the bigger news that had brought you here.
"O-Okay..." You licked your lips. "Kayce..."
You trailed off looking into his eyes.
"Been thinking a lot about you ever since that night," Kayce continued.
"Yeah...me too," You said softly.
Kayce eyed you.
"What is it, Y/N?" Kayce stepped closer to you.
"I'm...pregnant," You whispered.
His eyes changed color as he took in your admission.
"You're...pregnant?" He asked you.
"I'm sorry," You felt your eyes water. "It was a stupid mistake...we should have never...you weren't even divorced...Oh God, Kayce I'm like a home wrecker!"
"Y/N..." Kayce shook his head.
"I am so sorry," You cried. "I should have never asked you to come home with me...we were drunk...we shouldn't have... and now..."
"Stop it," Kayce reached up and cupped your cheeks, hushing you instantly.
You watched Kayce take a deep breath, his mind turning.
"Kayce," You mumbled, due to his palms pushing into your cheeks.
"First," Kayce blinked. "You are not a home wrecker. Don't ever call yourself that again, understand?"
"But-"
"No," Kayce interrupted again. "You are not that."
Your shoulders relaxed some.
"I went home with you that night," Kayce nodded. "I had been drinking but I wasn't drunk...I wanted to go home with you. I wanted that."
"You...did?" You asked.
"Y/N...I've wanted that since I was sixteen," Kayce ran one of his hands through your hair. "Second, you're sure you're pregnant?"
"Five tests say I am," You nodded.
"Why didn't you call me?" Kayce asked, "I would have gotten them for you. Sat there with you, something?"
"I-um..." You shrugged. "I didn't know. I didn't want you to freak out...I didn't want you to leave or something. I was scared."
Kayce pulled you into a warm hug against his chest. You took a deep breath, sinking into his embrace and wrapping your arms around his middle. He smelled like fresh air and leather and it calmed you down some.
"We'll figure this out," Kayce whispered. "But I'm here...I'm not going anywhere."
And he didn't.
Kayce was supportive throughout the whole pregnancy. He made every doctor appointment visit, he held your hair back during morning sickness, he massaged your lower back and feet when you were sore, and he made sure you had everything you needed.
When the time came, he was with you in the delivery room when you both welcomed your little boy into the world. Tate was there too, coming in a little afterward to meet his new brother.
"What's his name?" Tate asked as he sat next to you on the bed.
"Noah Lee Dutton," You smiled.
Kayce leaned over and kissed your forehead.
"But Y/N isn't a Dutton?" Tate asked all innocent.
"She's not," Kayce looked at you. "Yet."
