Author's Choice – Wildflowers

You wiggled your jean shorts over your swim bottoms, leaving the button undone as you sat back down on the blanket. You looked over to your right and a few yards down the riverbank you could see Kayce.

You weren't entirely sure what he was doing down there, but you had dried off from your afternoon swim some and decided to get some sun and maybe a nap in before you both needed to head back to summer camp for supper.

Leaning down you put your hands behind your head and took in a deep breath. The warm June sun felt so good on your face as you stretched your legs out, your toes getting ticked by the green grass. Kayce had somehow gotten John to let you both wander off for the afternoon and you were thankful for it.

The past few days up at camp had been memorable for you. You spent your days helping however you could with either cooking, tagging cattle, or stringing the lines for fencing. Nights were spent around campfires, with good stories and laughter. Evenings were spent in Kayce's arms, either tangled up in your tent or star gazing. It was your favorite place in the world you had come to realize.

A shadow passed over you face so you opened one eye to see Kayce standing above you. He was shirtless from the swim, and his skin had a nice tan to it from being a camp all summer so far. His hair was lighter too, eyes brighter as he smiled down at you. You opened your other eye.

"Why do you look like a Cheshire cat up to no good?" You giggled, bringing your hand up to shield your eyes so you could see better.

"Always thinkin' the best of me," Kayce pulled his hand from around his back and handed you a bouquet of wildflower he must have been picking.

There were golds mixed with light pinks and purple all bundled together. You were a sucker for any sort of wildflower and Kayce knew that. Leaning to sit up you took the bouquet from him and pressed your nose against the buds.

There was a light, sweet scent to them and it cleared the air around you as you breathed in deeply. Wildflowers were never strong, but they were calming and refreshing.

"Thanks, baby," You said softly as your eyes looked back up to Kayce.

Kayce sat down next to you, leaning back on his side as you both looked out in front of you. The river was alive this summer, rolling past you both. The rolling hills which turned into the mountain range in the distance beyond were breathtaking. You were a lover of snow and jackets and warm tea...but nothing compared to summers in Montana in your mind.

Kayce moved so he could lay his head down on your lap, one of his hands hooking back under your thigh as he looked up at you. You smiled down at him, pulling one of the smaller flowers from your bouquet and running it down his nose. Kayce jerked his head to the right, his nose bumping your thigh as you tickled him.

Your giggles were quiet against the flow of the river. Kayce took in a deep breath, and you felt his fingers dig into the back of your thigh.

"You smell like summer," Kayce said, looking back up at you.

"Sunscreen can do wonders," You smiled, sitting your bouquet down next to you so you could run your fingers through his hair while your other hand held you up behind you. "Also a proper bath too..."

"I just wanna stay right here," Kayce sighed, his eyes shutting as you tugged on his hair. "Forever."

"Wouldn't that be something?" You tilted your head.

Your took a finger and traced over the lines in Kayce's forehead, watching them disappear as he relaxed. You then traced your finger down his nose and against his jaw, his beard scruff rough. Traveling back to his lips, you softly traced over them.
