This was a request :)
When you walked into the office, a little bit surprised the door was already unlocked, you could see a faint glow from the light coming from Kayce's office door.
Sorry – Commissioner Dutton's office door.
That was really surprising, because for the last year you had always beaten him into the office. Always.
You sat your bag and coffee down on your desk, reaching over to turn your computer on, and took your coat off. It was December and while you were originally from Colorado, there was a difference between your hometown and here. But if Kayce was here, you may as well get him a cup of coffee.
He hadn't been into the kitchen because those lights were off. After opening things up you left his cup brewing and went down the hall to turn on the rest of the lights.
You were originally hired to be John Dutton's new secretary for Land Commissioner. But two weeks after you started, his youngest son took over. Kayce was, but also wasn't, his father. For starters, Kayce was a bit more polite to people. He didn't have the history yet, and from what you had observed, went out of his way for those he cared about. Sure, there were a few borderline misjudgment calls, not everything was done by the book, but that's where you came in. You weren't sure if Kayce knew you had saved not only his ass but this office a few too many times. But that was your job.
Your relationship with Kayce had grown over the year. Not necessarily friends, but more than coworkers that's for sure. You had been out to Yellowstone a few times, spending the night twice due to the timing and Kayce not wanting you to drive back in the dark. The ranch was beautiful, and you remember telling Kayce if people could only see this place, they'd understand why the Dutton's defend it. You also remember the look he gave you after saying that but choose to not focus on that because your stomach gets fuzzy.
Kayce was attractive, in that rugged-cowboy way with still some boyish charm and deep caramel eyes. There were a few times here and there a touch between the two of you lingered a little too long. He was married for the first six months of your time together, and you made it a priority to never even get close to that line. But you'd be a liar if you said once you knew his ex-wife Monica moved back to the reservation, you hadn't maybe left your hand on his shoulder a second or two more than what was professional. He was no different, with his hand on your lower back when you both were walking somewhere, or the long hug he gave you after you gave him a cupcake with a candle in it for his birthday last month when you were leaving that day to go home.
Kayce's coffee was done, so after grabbing the cup, you walked back out towards his office door. You knocked softly but didn't hear anything. Thinking maybe he had just left his light on accidentally when he left yesterday, you opened the door softly.
He was in there; he was just asleep on the couch against the wall. While normally you'd take full advantage of him not knowing you were staring, the deep bruise and cuts on his face were alarming. Taking a few steps closer you could see dirt along his neck and all over his clothes. He had at least taken his boots off, which were caked in mud.
You remembered Kayce's military training, so you gently sat down on the coffee table in front of the couch, placing the coffee next to you before clasping your hands together.
"Commissioner Dutton..." You whispered. You didn't want to startle him because you didn't want him to hurt himself or you.
Kayce didn't move so you leaned slightly forward and tried again, "Commissioner Dutton?"
Nothing except the movement of his chest up and down from labored breathing.
You scooted a few inches towards him and reached out to place a hand against his arm bent over his stomach. He moved, but it was subtle, his other hand coming over and resting on top of yours. You felt like a schoolgirl with how warm your cheeks felt.
