Request - Something along the line of Monica being a really bad mom to Tate and the reader sees something and tells Kayce and they go to get Tate away from Monica and she basically just give him to them because she never wanted to be a mother. Something like that.

I hope this version does this request justice 😊

You pulled up to the school on the reservation. This was the first time Monica had allowed you to come pick Tate up, so you were ten minutes early. Kayce had to work a little late today at the office, so you and Tate were going to head into town and meet him at the diner for supper. You watched other kids leave the school, mostly likely walking home due to how close the houses on the reservation were. Your eyes traced over the grounds trying to find Tate. Monica wasn't your biggest fan, so you didn't think she'd come out, but your eyes found her, bent over, and holding Tate's shoulders in a death-like grip.

You watched Tate try and pull away but Monica drug him back and shook him slightly, you couldn't hear her, but she was yelling at him about something. You could tell Tate was arguing with her, but his back was to you. Suddenly, Monica reached one of her hands back and slapped Tate across his cheek. It didn't look like it was a hard slap, but you gasped inside your truck and opened your door, unbuckling your seatbelt.

There were still kids and parents about, but you couldn't believe what you just saw. Tate stopped fighting Monica and hung his head. She was still saying something to him, but you took a few steps forward.

"Tate!" You called out and he immediately turned around. You could see a few tears in his eyes, but he did smile at you. Monica stood up sharply and took a few steps back. Tate reached down and grabbed his backpack before taking off towards you.

"Hey Y/N," He said as he crossed the street. You immediately put an arm around him as he got into the backseat of your truck, your eyes not leaving Monica. She stared at you for a moment before turning around and walking back inside the school.

A few minutes later you were driving back into town. Tate hadn't said much to you, he was looking down at his seat when you glanced in the rearview mirror.

"You okay back there?" You asked.

"Yeah," Tate muttered.

"Tate," You sighed. "Do you want to talk about anything?"

"Not right now, Y/N," Tate frowned and looked out the window as you passed the city limit sign.

"Okay buddy," You nodded. "I'm here when you do want to talk though okay?"

"You saw, didn't you?" He mumbled.

"Yeah," You frowned and felt like you wanted to cry. "Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Has this happened before?"

"No."

"Are you lying to me?"

Tate didn't answer you and you felt rage coarse through your veins now. You were almost to the diner and knew Kayce would probably already be there. You found a parking spot and pulled in, turning the truck off, and turning around to look at Tate.

"Buddy," You said looking into his eyes. "What happened was not okay, do you understand that?"

"I know," Tate blinked back at you.

"You know I have to tell your dad about this?" You reached out and rubbed his arm.

"Can I stay in here?" Tate asked. He was looking behind you though, so you turned and saw Kayce waiting at the front of your truck, smiling but looking a little confused as to why you both weren't coming out. You looked back at Tate.
