Request – So I have combined three different requests that all centered around 'Kayce coming home after a rough day and the Reader comforting him.' Hope you all enjoy!
You had gotten a head's up from your father-in-law about ten minutes before Kayce arrived home. There had been a drug bust on the reservation. Kayce and his team had been called in for backup and it ended in a shoot-out. Seven people were killed, two being fifteen-year-old boys. Three of Kayce's officers were hit as well, but only minor injuries.
It was days like these when you questioned Kayce's stamina for doing this job. Not that you felt he couldn't, you just hated what it did to him. Kayce was hot and cold at times like this. You didn't know how he'd be, whether he would come in and pick a fight with you or he'd seclude himself somewhere.
You walked over to the window when you saw headlights come through. Kayce stayed in his truck for a few moments as you waited. Eventually, he got out, shut the door, and walked down to where the wranglers were cleaning up for the evening.
You reached for the front door, slipped your boots on, and made your way after him. You knew what had happened, the wranglers didn't, and one wrong comment could send Kayce off. It didn't take you long to reach Kayce.
He was leaning with his arms on top of the fence as he watched Teeter and Walker round up the remaining cattle into another pen. You came up slowly on his side, your hands folded over each other next to his elbow.
Kayce glanced at you and you saw lifeless eyes. You had to swallow hard to not force your arms around him. Kayce chose to walk down here which meant he didn't want comfort from you at the moment.
"Dad call you," Kayce asked as he looked back at the cows.
"People are allowed to worry about you," You said.
Kayce sighed, kicking the ground with his boots almost like he was a child again. You could feel the disappointment and frustration from the way his shoulders were so tense.
"You two okay?" Lloyd called out to you.
"Fine," You waved back, not wanting him to come over.
Lloyd nodded and the wranglers all retired to the bunkhouse now for the night. The porch lights on the buildings all came on, casting Kayce's face into more shadows. Your eyes didn't leave Kayce though as he stood there, not moving.
"What can I do to help?" You asked softly.
"Just leave me alone," Kayce grunted.
"That's not an option," You shook your head.
Kayce turned and glared at you.
"I mean it, Y/N," He growled. "Leave."
"No," You took a deep breath.
"What do you want from me?" Kayce snapped, throwing his arms up in question at you.
"I don't want anything from you," You answered, keeping your voice calm and low. "I want to make sure you're okay."
"M'not okay," Kayce laughed, but it wasn't funny. "I just...I ain't okay."
You stood there in silence for a few minutes.
"Can you tell me what happened?" You asked gently.
"Dad told you," Kayce looked down.
"But I want to hear it from you," You pressed.
"Why?" Kayce's eyes narrowed at you. "So you can see what I really am? See that I'm..."
"That you're what?" You asked.
