Request – I have to prove myself to you, part two

Two weeks later

You were watching the snow fall from your bedroom window. There was already a good five inches on the ground from the last fall, with this one predicted to be another seven or eight. There were light footsteps coming down the hall that made you turn around in time to see Tate walk into your room.

"Y/N," He smiled, a bit out of breath. "Grandpa is making hot chocolate."

"I hear that's the perfect drink in the snow," You smile at him. "Enough for everyone?"

"Unless I drink it all," Tate laughed.

The past few weeks Tate had been at the ranch. It was strange, in the best way, to have a child running around. Suddenly the adult seemed more upbeat, there was a carefree atmosphere for the most part. Plus, it was hard to not be happy with Tate's sense of humor and quick wit.

You hadn't been alone with Kayce since you kissed him next to your car two weeks ago. Sure, there had been some awkward family dinners and horse rides around the ranch, but someone was always with you. Maybe that was best though, as Kayce had a challenging time moving into the foreman's cabin and running the team of wranglers. Your mind briefly flashed to when Kayce and Rip fought in front of the barn.

"You coming?" Tate asked.

"Be down in a bit," You smiled at the boy. "Save some hot chocolate for me."

Tate ran off as you sat down on your bed. You pulled your boots on, brushing off a mark you saw before you stood up. You went to step when another figure appeared in your doorway.

"Hey," Kayce said, standing with two white mugs of what you could only assume was hot chocolate.

"I told Tate I was coming," You smiled, walking over to Kayce.

He held out a mug for you.

"Thank you," You brought the drink to your lips carefully, your eyes fluttering up to look at Kayce.

"Snows coming down," Kayce looked out your window.

"Yeah," You looked behind you. "I love it."

"You always have loved the snow," Kayce nodded.

"How are you?" You asked him.

"Good," Kayce said. "I've enjoyed Tate being here."

"I know you have," You smiled. "So, have I...thank you for letting us get to know him more."

"Figured it's the least I could do for Dad," Kayce shrugged.

"How are you with him?" You couldn't help but reach your hand out and smooth down his shirt on his chest.

"He's, uh..." Kayce shrugged. "He's dad."

"He's so happy you're here," You offered. "I know he has a hard way of showing it at times."

Kayce gave you a look that told you he understood.

"How are you?" Kayce asked you.

"I'm alright," You whispered, bringing your mug to your lips for something to do.

"Still lonely?" Kayce asked softly.

"Always," You blinked at him.

"Sorry we haven't been able to talk much," Kayce sighed. "Things got busy."

"I know," You reached out and held onto his shirt sleeve. "I'm proud of you."

"Y/N..." Kayce sighed and stepped closer to you, wrapping his arm around you and pulling you into his chest.

You were careful of your mug as your other arm held Kayce to you, your nose resting against where his neck met his collarbone. Kayce leaned his head against yours as you both relished in the silence.

You were concerned with the holidays coming up. You knew they would be hard for everyone...but you were also worried about yourself. Lee and you had both loved the holidays, having only spent a couple as a married pair. But you knew there would be a dull ache in your heart when you would wake up those mornings and he wouldn't be there. You knew more tears were to come.

"Dad!" Tate called from downstairs. "Are you two coming?"

You giggled at Tate's excitement but noticed that Kayce didn't let go of you. Your hand on his back rubbed up and down, almost as if to check if he was okay without asking him out loud.

"Just another minute," Kayce mumbled to you only, and his words made you pause for a second before burrowing closer to him.

You sat your mug on the dresser nearest to you both and then wrapped your other arm around him. Kayce sighed into you, getting rid of his own mug before he cupped the back of your head, his thumb rubbing your cheek. Your noses bumped into one another.

Even with the snow, the work still had to be done. Kayce smelled like the outside, with a coolness to him. He also smelled like leather and dirt, a scent you had remembered from Lee. But there was also something else there...something that made you calm and feel peaceful. Like the outside disappeared behind you as Kayce's caramel eyes looked into yours.

"Maybe Tate can stay with his grandpa tonight," Kayce said softly.

"Okay," You didn't blink.

"Then maybe you and I could be lonely together at the cabin?" Kayce tilted his head a little while he looked at you in question.

You took a deep breath.

"I won't be lonely with you," You whispered to Kayce.

"Dad!" Tate called again.

"Be down in a minute, son!" Kayce said over his shoulder.

You giggled at him, reaching up to turn his face back to yours. Your fingers scratched along his beard as if you were tracing his jawline.

"That sounds nice," You said about Kayce's offer.

"You'll have to tell me how far I can go," Kayce said to you. "Cause I won't stop unless you tell me."

"I don't want you to stop," You said to him again. "Even if you want to fuck me against my car like we're sixteen."

Kayce chuckled at that.

"I don't wanna fuck you against the car, Y/N..." Kayce surprised you by kissing you deeply.

A few seconds later he broke the kiss but kept his lips brushing against yours.

"I wanna make love to you," Kayce whispered. "Slow...be in your arms...kiss every part of you...give you my all."

"Kayce..." You gasped at his words, your lips pressing against his as you could hardly breathe.

You pushed Kayce up against the wall of your bedroom as his hands roamed your body. Your kisses were sloppy as if you couldn't get enough of the man in front of you.

"Dad!" Tate knocked on the door and you sprung away from Kayce faster than you ever had another man. "Let's go!"

"Tate!" Kayce snapped but then cooled down, running a hand through his hair. "We gotta work on your patience buddy."

"Grandpa said I should stay with him tonight," Tate looked between the two of you.

"Do you want to?" Kayce glanced over at you.

"He said that you and Y/N would be working on something boring at the cabin and I could either help you or watch movies with him," Tate shrugged. "So, I chose him."

"Okay, bud," Kayce smiled. "Whatever you want."

Tate turned around and started to walk back to the stairs. You looked over as Kayce gathered both of your mugs. He stopped and looked over at you. Brushing your hair back from your face you stepped over to him, placing your hands on his arm.

Kayce didn't move though, looking at you as though he was expecting something. You smirked, leaning up on your toes and pressing a short but sweet kiss to his cheek.

The two of you made your way out of your bedroom.
