You didn't relax until the truck driving you home passed under the Dutton Ranch sign. The deputies sitting in the front seat tried to ask you questions on the ride home, but you hadn't answered one of them. All you wanted was a hot shower and your bed.

Pulling up to the main house you saw Beth waiting, her arms wrapped around herself. You had the door open before the truck came to a stop, and your feet had barely touched the ground before Beth's arm were around you.

The two of you stood there for a few minutes, holding each other. You knew you probably smelled some, even though you had only been gone less than 48 hours. Your eyes caught a few wranglers standing around the perimeter of the house, all with guns.

"Is your father here?" One of the deputies asked Beth.

"He'll be back in a few hours," Beth said, her arms still around you. "It takes a while to get back here from Nebraska."

John, Kayce, Rip, and a few others had traveled down to Nebraska with three hundred head of cattle. They were due back tomorrow anyway, but when everything went south...and Beth finally got a hold of them, they had high tailed it back.

"Well wait and talk to him," The deputy said.

Beth led you back into the house, up the stairs, and down the hall to your room. Sitting you gently on the bed, she then went into the bathroom, and you could hear her turning the shower on. You glanced at the mirror on your dresser and took in your appearance.

Your hair was stringy, your clothes wrinkled and dirty. There was dirt and dried blood on your nose and cheek along with a black eye. The only thin making you not look away was knowing two of the guys who did this to you had bullet holes in their heads now.

"Think you can stand for a shower?" Beth's question made you look over at her.

"Maybe," You shrugged. "You don't have to help me."

"Come on," Beth nodded her head. "You've done it for me."

That was true. Beth had been your best friend for over a decade now. There had been a few times your roles had been reversed and you remember taking care of the last female Dutton left. You had also taken care of a few other Dutton's in your friendship with the family. Even Kayce.

Your relationship with Kayce was always black and white. If he wasn't yelling at you, you were throwing something at him. But there were moments throughout the years where it would be quiet and still. Your eyes would catch, and you'd see something inside his brown eyes that would make you feel something for him.

After your shower, Beth let you change into a pair of gray sweats and a large blue t-shirt. You were put back into your bed, the covers up to your waist as you sat back. Beth had brought you a whiskey and some pills, those the pills still sat on the nightstand.

The whiskey was half-empty now.

"You wanna talk about it?" Beth asked as she sat next to you.

"Nothing really to talk about," You shrugged. "They thought I was someone else...then thought they could get money from your dad...I wouldn't talk, they hit me...now they're all dead by one who's in jail."

"And he'll die there," Beth sighed. "Did they do anything more than hit you?"

You looked at her and blinked.
