Tuesday Night

"I don't think it's weird," Kayce sighed, closing the stall door after he put your horse away.

"You don't think it's weird for me to tell my boyfriend that I'm hanging out with you instead for my birthday?" You laughed, leaning against the barn wall.

"Like he'd notice," Kayce mumbled.

"What?" You asked.

"We've been friends longer than you two have been together even, Y/N," Kayce sighed. "You haven't even slept with him yet...plus he's a loser."

"You think everyone who isn't you or doesn't have the last name Dutton is a loser," You rolled your eyes. "And maybe my birthday is what I was waiting for with Josh?"

Kayce's head snapped to look back at you.

"The fuck?" Kayce asked.

"I think it's time," You shrugged.

"Y/N...you haven't," Kayce sat the bucket and rake down.

"I know," You shrugged. "But Josh and I have been together for two months now...I think that's plenty of time and he's asked me about it."

"You mean he's pressured you," Kayce's eyes narrowed.

"No," You glared. "Contrary to what you believe, not everyone is out to get me."

"I went to school with Josh," Kayce walked over to you. "We were friends once...he ain't thinking about anything but one thing with you."

"I think I'm in love with him," You mumbled.

"You're in love with him?" Kayce asked and his eyes dulled.

"I-I might be...I'm not sure," You fidgeted with Kayce's hoodie that you were wearing. "What does it feel like?"

"Love?" Kayce asked and you nodded.

"You ever been?" You asked.

Sure, Kayce had had plenty of girls throw themselves at him over the years, but you had never seen him get serious with any of them. While Kayce was always respectful of women, he did seem to leave them as soon as they got a little more serious.

"I don't know," Kayce sighed, mimicking you and leaning against the wall. "You really think you love him?"

"I only question it when you start questioning me," You answered honestly.

"I don't mean to be a pain, Y/N," Kayce kicked his boots back. "I just don't want you to get yourself hurt."

"Then how about you be my friend and be supportive?" You pushed off the wall and smiled at Kayce. "And you let me stay for some of Gator's cooking tonight?"

Kayce smiled at you while you turned and walked off. But then his smile fell, a growing pit in his stomach at the thought of what might happen in two nights on your twentieth birthday. You were special to Kayce even without his feelings towards you. Having grown up together, even though Kayce was a few years older than you, he always had been drawn to you.
