Author's Note - this one is a tough, but special one. The topic of miscarriages ranges in emotions, but this author cares very deeply about people supporting those who have gone through situations like these. So please be kind like I know you already are. xx
"Mrs. Dutton..." Your doctor had that look on her face.
"Please don't," You shook your head back and forth, feeling like you couldn't breathe again.
"I am so sorry," Your doctor placed her hand on your knee while you were seated on the exam table.
"Not again," You reached up and held your face in your hands.
"This is not what you wanted to hear," Your doctor sighed. "But that does not mean it's the end for you and having a baby the natural way."
You let out a sob, your shoulders jumping as you tried to fight back to pain ripping through your chest right now. This would be the third time you had heard your doctor say those words to you.
"Are you able to call your husband to come pick you up?" Your doctor asked gently. "I don't want you driving right now."
You finally pulled your hands away. Your cheeks were tear-stained as your red eyes looked back at the woman who had just informed you that you had lost the baby. Your third baby. Three times you've sat in this exact clinic and been told your body just wasn't able to sustain a pregnancy.
"Let me call Kayce for you," The doctor offered you a sad smile.
Around ten minutes later the door opened back up and Kayce stuck his head inside. You hadn't moved from your spot, staring at the white wall in front of you feeling defeated and inadequate.
"Darlin'..." Kayce gently shut the door behind him and walked over to you.
Your eyes were already sore as you looked up into his. There was so much pain behind his eyes it was almost too much for you to take. The only person who wanted a baby more than you was Kayce. Immediately you remembered the day you had told him you were pregnant again.
Flashback
"Why are you not smiling?" Kayce asked as his lips spread so far you thought they might break his face.
"I'm just nervous," You breathed out. "I've lost two and"
"Don't think like that," Kayce hushed you, his arms still wrapped around you. "This time will be different."
"How do you know that?" You looked up at him.
"Because you're the strongest woman I know," Kayce leaned down and kissed your lips. "Because we're gonna have a baby...it's gonna work this time."
You smiled as Kayce then reached around your waist, picking you up and spinning you around in the kitchen. Your laughter filled the room as Kayce pressed multiple kisses to your face.
End Flashback
"Baby..." Kayce reached out to hold your cheek but you flinched away from him.
