Reader ex boyfriend tells her she can't sing so she don't sing around people anymore one night she's watching the herd and she plays soft music she sings along soon kayce rides up next to her and she stops kayce ask " why did you stop " " not good " " you are "
You were about two weeks into the longest cattle drive of the summer for the ranch. It would take a total of five weeks to move them down the mountains and over the three pastures to get them ready to sort and load up for their drive down south. You had only visited Kayce before on the drives, never staying longer than a few nights before leaving, but this summer he asked you to come for the whole time.
You had enjoyed yourself more than you thought you would and your relationship with Kayce had grown more, being together twenty-four-seven. After dating a string of losers, Kayce Dutton literally ran into your life about two years ago. You had stopped to not hit a deer and Kayce had rear-ended you...something he still blames you for even though you said it was because he was following too close at the time.
Right now you were relaxed, sitting under the stars with your back against a tall pine as you looked out over the nearly three hundred heard. It was your turn to watch the cattle, your shift lasting until probably three in the morning when Ryan was supposed to take over for you. You glanced back at the makeshift campsite to the far right, your eyes landing on the tent you knew Kayce was sleeping in. You wished you could be in there with him.
One thing Kayce didn't tell you about was the lack of things to do while you were on the night shift. You couldn't read, because the light needed would bother the cattle. You were usually solo, so small conversations couldn't be had either.
You glanced to the left again and could see for a few miles due to the moonlight, but then the darkness covered the land. It was beautiful, peaceful and for some reason, you thought about your favorite song.
Pulling your phone out, you scrolled through until you found it, turning the volume down low and pressing play. You sat the phone by your hip as you crossed your arms over your bent knees.
There's a man at my house, he's so big and strong
He goes to work each day, and he stays all day long
You smiled to yourself as you listened to the music drifting up from your speaker.
I think I'll color this man father
I think I'll color him love
Said I'm gonna color him father
I think I'll color the man love, yes I will
There was the sound of a snapping stick that made you stop and quickly look behind you. Kayce was standing a few feet, looking guilty for making you stop.
"Hey," Kayce said, walking up to you.
"Hi," You looked down and shut your music off.
Kayce leaned down and mimicked your pose, looking over at you.
"Why'd you stop?" He asked you with a small smile.
"Oh," You shook him off. "I can't sing for crap. No one needs to hear that."
"No you don't," Kayce looked confused at you.
"I'm not good," You shrugged.
"You are," Kayce leaned over and tapped your shoulder with his.
His comment made you smile. Your old boyfriend had once told you, you couldn't sing. He was also drunk and had thrown a beer at you right before, but you took it to heart. No one had heard you sing since that night, until now.
"Thank you for bringing me out here," You smiled at Kayce.
"Thanks for coming," Kayce leaned back on his elbow and stretched out his legs.
"You didn't want to sleep?" You picked at the grass below you.
"Missed you," Kayce mumbled.
You bit your lips to keep yourself from smiling too big at Kayce, but when you looked down at him and saw his smirk you couldn't stop yourself. You scooted down, laying out next to Kayce as he wrapped his arm around you, your head on his chest.
"I like the night shift," Kayce whispered against your forehead.
"Why's that?" You asked him, wrapping your arm around his middle.
"It's quiet," Kayce shrugged.
"Peaceful," You nodded in agreement.
Kayce leaned his head back on his arm not around you as you both settled in for another few hours. You both talked off and on about everything and nothing...it was perfect.
