You hated hospitals.

Ever since you were a kid you hated them. But now as an adult, all you wanted to do was get out and go home to your bed and sleep. You had been in the hospital for the past five days, recovering from a bad car accident. A semi had stopped suddenly, causing you to rear-end them and the truck behind you to smash into you. The impact fractured six ribs and your pelvis bone. You had been in a wheelchair ever since you woke up.

The doctor said it would take four weeks before you'd be able to go to rehab for walking. The message was difficult to hear but at least it wasn't permanent. You had currently wheeled yourself out into the hallway, trying to find someone who could go don to the cafeteria and get you some ice cream even though it was nine in the morning.

You rolled past the big windows that opened up to the mountain range off in the distance. It was beautiful, snow-capped, and bright staring back at you. There were a few cars in the parking lot but not a lot of people outside...probably due to the colder temperatures now.

Your eyes did catch a man sitting down on the brick siding of the walkway. He was dressed in jeans, a gray hoodie and a tan vest, a black cowboy hat atop his head. Even from the second story, you could tell he was sad. No, not sad...heartbroken, Hospitals can do that to a person though. You wondered why he was here, or who he was here for.

A truck had pulled into the lot, making the man turn to stare at it. You could see some type of decal on the sign in yellow as a guy got out and shut the driver's door. He walked into the side door where you couldn't really see him clearly, but the man on the wall stood up, his eyes following the other guy.

You watched the cowboy walk after the man, inside the hospital. Figuring your show was over, you pushed the wheelchair down the hall more. Your favorite nurse, Elliot, was probably here since he took the mid-morning shift. He'd get you ice cream if you flirted enough with him.

"Stop it, Kayce!"

You heard a commotion around one of the corners. You pushed yourself forward, stopping the wheels when you were able to see what was going on.

"I'm not here for anything other than support!" The guy who had gotten out of the truck earlier was currently pushed up against one of the walls, the hospital's chairs pushed to the side. The cowboy had his arm pressed against the guy's neck.

"Bullshit," The cowboy, who now you were assuming was Kayce, growled.

"I promise!" The other man breathed. "I honestly was looking for you. Your dad told me to come get you! Brand's honor!"

Kayce immediately lifted his weight off the other guy. A few nurses had joined you in watching what was going on.

"M'fine," Kayce grunted, waving his arm. "Go."

The other guy walked off, rubbing his neck and muttering to himself. You looked over at Kayce who had fallen back into one of the chairs. The nurses around you all walked back to what they had been doing. The heartbroken look was back on Kayce's face. Taking a deep breath, you wheeled your chair down the hallway, like it or not this was the way to the cafeteria.

When you pulled up to almost where Kayce was he looked over at you. His expression changed though, his eyes not so glossy, the lines in his face not so deep.

"Hey," You paused right in front of him. "You okay?"

"What?" Kayce cleared his throat.

"Are you okay?" You asked again.

"Yeah," Kayce looked towards the ground.

You watched him for a moment. What should happen is you forget about this handsome cowboy and roll right on down the way toward the ice cream you deserved. But there was something about him that made you want to comfort him. Almost like he was a child or something.

"Do you like ice cream?" You heard yourself say. Immediately you called yourself an idiot inside your head. Kayce looked up at you with a confused look.

"Ice cream?" He asked.

"Yeah," You nodded. "Do you know what that is?"

Montana was rural. Maybe he was some weird mountain man who didn't even know where he was?

"I know what fuckin ice cream is," Kayce raised an eyebrow at you.

"You don't have to be an ass," You narrowed your eyes at him. "You can say yes, like a normal person."

"Sorry," Kayce's cheeks turned pink and you thought it was adorable. "Just having a bad day."

"Well," You turned your chair towards him. "I hear ice cream can make days a little better?"

"It's nine in the morning," Kayce said but a small smile spread on his lips.

"So?" You shrugged. "It's a miracle I'm gonna walk again in four weeks...I think we can disregard rules while we're in here."

"Do you..." Kayce stood up and was immediately much taller than you. "Do you want a push?"

"You're catching on quick, cowboy," You smiled and turned your chair to the left, watching Kayce place his hands on the bars in the back.

"What are you in for?" Kayce asked as he pushed you down the hall.

"Car accident," You sighed, looking up at him. "You?"

"My uh...wife got into a fight at school and is in here," Kayce frowned.

"That sucks," You nodded. "I'm sorry."

"I'm sorry you got hurt," Kayce pushed you into the small cafeteria.

Kayce pushed you up to one o the tables and then walked over to the ice cream machine, pouring the creamy sustenances into two small bowls before walking back over and sliding one of the bowls across to you. You pulled two spoons from the dispenser and handed one to Kayce.

"Is she gonna be okay?" You asked, taking a bite. "Your wife."

"Yeah," Kayce sighed.

"You don't seem too happy about that," You noticed.

"I think my marriage is over regardless," Kayce shrugged, biting his spoon. You stopped eating and looked over at him.

"I'm sorry," You said. "Maybe you can talk it out?"

"You're a little later to the game," Kayce offered you a small smile.

"Then I hope you two can end it peacefully," You shrugged. "There's enough heartbreak in this world as it...you don't need to create anymore."

Kayce watched you for a moment, his bowl empty now.

"What's your name?" He asked.

"Y/N..." You licked your spoon.

"Do you not want to know my name?" Kayce chuckled.

"Kayce," You smirked at his shocked expression. "I heard the guy you had in a headlock say it."

"Oh," His cheeks were pink again. You wondered how you were able to make a cowboy blush like this.

"I need to get back to my room," You looked at the clock. "I have to take these pain pills every hour."

"I'll push you," Kayce stood back up.

"It's okay," You shook your head. "Don't you need to get back to your wife...for now at least?"

"I'll get you back and then go," Kayce tossed both of your bowls into the trash before pushing you back out.

It was when he moved his arm though that you saw the brand on his vest. It showed 'The Yellowstone Ranch' embroidered in yellow.

You looked forward in surprise, realizing it was Kayce Dutton who was pushing your chair back to your room. Now it was your turn to have pink cheeks.
