Request - Can I request where the reader is nervous but asks Mr. Dutton to walk her down the aisle since he's been like a father to her and Kayce overhears it and makes fun of her for it?
You sat on the front porch, your knee bouncing up and down from your nerves. It was late in the afternoon and you were waiting for John Dutton to get back from his day in town for meetings. He very rarely left the ranch these days, but he had some business to take care of. A truck pulled across the gravel road and you leaned up in your seat, but it was just Kayce.
Your knee continued bouncing as Kayce got out of his truck and made his way up the steps to you. He smiled at you while he leaned down and kiss your forehead.
"Hey," He said.
"How was your day?" You asked as you handed him your half-empty beer for a taste.
"Nothing exciting," Kayce sat down next to you, kicking his boots up on the table and taking another sip. "What'd you do?"
"Finishing the flower for the wedding," You said and leaned back into Kayce. "And got the band signed."
"Busy," Kayce's arm fell around your shoulders.
The two of you were getting married in four weeks. While you thought a ten-month engagement sounded like a long time, it had gone by quickly. You wanted a spring wedding though, as the summer months would be too warm and the cattle season would start. The winter months were out of the question too for obvious reasons.
"Why're you out here?" Kayce suddenly asked.
"I'm waiting for your dad," You said.
"Why?" Kayce asked, finishing the beer.
"I need to ask him something," You shrugged. John's truck turned the corner and started its way toward the main house. Your heart skipped a beat as it got closer but you were thankful Kayce was too tired to sense your anxiety.
John got out of his truck and spotted you and Kayce. He looked a little confused, but he smiled as he walked over to where you both were sitting.
"Wasn't expecting you," John stopped. "I'd have had Gator fix something for us."
"Sorry to just drop by," You stood up quickly. "I-uh...needed to ask you a question that I felt was better in person than just over the phone."
"Okay..." John looked down at Kayce who shrugged back at him before he looked up at you, curious now too.
"Um," You swayed on your feet for a moment. "You know I don't have a dad, right?"
John gave you a weird look while Kayce slowly stood up from his seat next to you.
"Everything okay?" Kayce asked, reaching out to hold your arm gently.
"Yeah," You nodded at him before turning to John. "So, since I don't have a dad...and they sort of play an important part in weddings...dads do, you know? Well, I was gonna ask you, if you wanted to...and you don't have to, it won't hurt my feelings one bit, because you're not mine...but if you thought maybe it was something you wanted to do I would so greatly appreciate it, but again if you don't want to..."
"Oakley?" John cut you off.
"Yeah?" You paused.
"You wanna take a breath and try again?" John laughed while Kayce rubbed your arm lovingly.
You took a shaky breath and cleared your throat, this being a bit more difficult than you originally thought it would be.
"John," You stated.
"Oakley," John nodded.
"Would you walk me down the aisle?"
What felt like an hour was only about a minute, but you watched John get a strange look on his face. Before he could answer though you felt Kayce laughing beside you. You glanced at him as he rolled his eyes.
"What?" You asked.
"Are you being serious?" Kayce looked down at you.
"What do you mean?" You felt your shoulders sag.
"After the things he's done, you want him to give you away?" Kayce asked.
"Kayce," John looked down.
"No," Kayce turned more towards you. "I know you're all about the good in people, but need I remind you he didn't want us to get married in the first place."
"That's not true," John sighed.
"Yes it was," Kayce snapped at him. "You tried everything in your book to separate us because of Y/N's family history with you."
"I didn't realize she knew nothing about it," John defended himself. "Once I knew she wasn't trying to con her way in with a personal vendetta..."
"Then she was worthy?" Kayce laughed. "She's ten times the better person you or I could ever be."
"Kayce," You made him pause as you laced your fingers through his. Kayce looked at you again and then down at your hands. "Thanks for trying to protect me, but I'm doing this because I want to and because I know how far your dad and I have come."
You looked over at John again.
"We've had our ups and downs," You spoke softly. "But I need a father to give me away, and you're the closest thing I have to one."
You felt Kayce's fingers squeeze yours.
"I know we aren't conventional," You sighed. "But we're all we have."
John took a few steps until he was right next to you and Kayce.
"Y/N," John said. "I would be honored to walk you down the aisle."
"Really?" You asked, a little bit surprised.
"More than you know," He gave you a tight smile before turning and walking inside. You watched as the shut swung shut before looking at Kayce.
"What was that?" You asked about John's abrupt exit.
"He was gonna cry," Kayce's eyes were looking at the door now, they were softer than earlier.
"I should have asked you before," You said but Kayce shook his head and cut you off.
"No," He reached up and cupped your cheek. "Thanks for making me a part of our day. Lord knows I wouldn't have thought to."
"He's your father," You whispered. "He's always gonna be a part of our lives."
Kayce hummed in response before pulling your face to his for a sweet kiss. The front door opened again and John awkwardly stepped out, sniffing hard to seem like he hadn't cried.
"I uh, got a few steaks I can grill," He pointed behind him. "If you wanna stay for supper. You can maybe go over exactly what you need me to do?"
You looked at Kayce who smiled back down at you before you looked over at John, "We'd love to."
